Video Game stuff -- Hitman 2: Silent Assassin

Ok. I just finally made it through the first level. Here’s how.

I did the strangle the guard taking a piss deal. I walked inside the compound, and into the cellar without being seen. I wandered around inside the house aimlessly, yet stealthily, with no weapons drawn. The first live person I came within a few yards from shot me. This made me angry, so I totally went Killing Zoe on those fuckers and just mowed every living asshole down until if became clear that whatever twisted objectives are associated with that level were cleared.

I started Mission 2. I found the locker. I found the ammo. I found no sniper rifle. I wandered around the streets until a guard shot me. I killed him, took his duds and headed toward the building. I went inside and just randomly shot people since it was apparent I did something wrong and there was no way I was going to solve this impossible puzzle.

You guessed it – mission failed.

Final verdict: This game sucks.

The end.

Sigh. Well, I’m sorry you’re having such a tough time of it. You didn’t mention taking the guard’s clothes; you did that, right? The people you encounter in the first level are very very suspicious, and the clothes won’t help you in a face-to-face encounter. My guess is, the place is so small that everyone knows everyone else, and changing into guard clothes is only helpful in that it keeps people from noticing you from a great distance. In later levels, disguises are much easier to pull off. Another site I peeked at seems to feel that some persons (the Don’s son?) will shoot you on sight, so maybe you just keep running into that guy.

As for the second level, I’m going from memory, but here’s the way I did it and got the Silent Assassin rating:

The rifle really is there. Maybe you just weren’t positioned right to find it, but the rifle is indeed in the locker; he’ll take it out and assemble it when you pick it up. If you don’t see the rifle, reposition the Hitman until you do. Anyway, walking around carrying a rifle will obviously arouse a great deal of suspicion, so you’ll need to stay completely out of sight as you make your way out of the entry area. Dodge the civilians by going down onto the railroad tracks if you have to. When you’re clear, run up the stairs.

Careful once you leave the station, because there’s a guard who occasionally comes down from the street and patrols the hallway from the station to the street. Before you reach the street, you’ll see stairs leading down to a room where there’s another guard. Slip down there and through the door when he’s on the other side of the lockers.

Pick the lock and head into the sewers. I can’t remember the route I took, but I ended up across the square to the southeast of the building you need to get to. As I came out of the alley, there was a guard near some stairs to my left (South). He’s alone and quite easy to sneak up on and anesthetize. Take his clothes. Now you’re much less conspicuous walking around with the sniper rifle. Run/walk to the building just west of the one where the meeting is taking place. Running probably won’t raise suspicion, but keep your eye on the meter, and don’t get too close to anyone.

When you’re in the building, head for the second or third floor, to a room facing the target building (you’ll have to pick a lock). There’s a guard in this building; don’t let him see you if you can avoid it. There are, I think, two open windows on the second floor, and one on the third floor. I was short on time, so I stayed on the second. Aim your rifle, wait for the description of your target, and take him out.

Once you’ve fired, immediately drop the rifle. The room you’re in is about to fill up with police. Get your ass to another room, quickly. Casually walk downstairs and out of the building. Head for another sewer opening. I found that if I tried to leave by the same route, I’d run into the guard I’d drugged, and he’d raise an alarm (plus he has that AK-47), so you might want to take an alternate route. Back through the sewer, back to the train station, and you’re a Silent Assassin.

Is this game available for PC, or is it Xbox only? It sounds cool.

It was made for the PC first, and because of that that version is better. It also runs really, really well.

I swear, I have done everything prescribed. I have disguised myself. I’ve walked not run. I’ve not walked around with the wrong weapon drawn. I’ve read ever FAQ on the game I could find. It is inherrantly a crappy game.

I mean it’s a great game on paper, it just plays like crap.

After I posted that last night, I did the level again. Picking up the sniper rifle in the locker is just a matter of getting your guy in the right place to see it, so that was my bad on the first go around.

I made it up to the street and took out the first guard because he didn’t appreciate me toting a rifle around. Got his clothes, and hid his body and headed for my target. I figured out which building I was supposed to be in to snipe from and headed toward that. Meanwhile, I have that retard from headquarters telling me, “The meeting starts in one minute, you better hurry 47.” No shit, lady.

I could not get into the building without raising suspicion if I wanted to get there in time. As I’m walking up the stairs, trying to figure out which window I need to shoot out of, I get jumped by another guard. By this time the whole friggin’ KGB is on my ass, and the meeting is over.

Golly, that was fun.

AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH.

I’d rather be Rune Glifburg that 47.

Not really, if he gets inside of a ten foot radius of a guard or starts jogging he gets shot.

No, I meant the guard will simply blow #47 away. I mean, I know this is Russia, but I think they probably don’t order their troops to shoot each other on sight should they happen to be hurrying.

Not true. I can walk right next to a guard for a brief period of time and not get caught. I have bumped into them before as well with no problems.

This was all on normal difficulty though, so if you are talking about hard it may be, well, harder.

Jack, in level two, there is a truck somewhere which will take you behind the building you want to snipe from. I think it’s to the left as you exit the subway. Hop in the back. Kill the two guards behind the building, or just run in while their backs are turned. Run up the stairs (I don’t know if there are any guards there). It’ll be obvious where to shoot from- the window will be opened and facing the target building. Kill the right guy and just run your ass to the subway as guards try to kill you. Don’t even bother killing them.

Of course there are other ways- you could get a guard costume, enter the office where the generals are meeting, and kill the right one. That’ll be hard to hit the right guy without killing the other generals, but you don’t need to snipe to go all the way to that building.

I’m sorry you don’t like it. I thought it was a great game (One of the better stealth games).

That’s a bit of an exageration. Jogging gets the guards attention in that they come up closer to find out who you are. And it’s definatly not 10 feet, you usually have to be within about 3 or 4. And if you do it only briefly, you can get away with even that (In “Killing Hannelore” I fiber-wire a guard by the docks, take his clothes, and then walk right in the door beside another guard… Get a “red” awareness level for a second, but I’m out of sight before he figures it out, so it’s just a “close call”, and I end up getting Silent Assassin rating.

It sounds like you might be better off with something like Doom. Those first two missions aren’t hard at all, if you just have a little patience. And about that comment you had about the first character that came within a couple yards shooting you… Don’t get close to them! Duck in a side room, whatever. Disguises only work so long as you don’t get close enough that they can see who you really are. Just use a little patience…

The second mission is as easy as the first. Go to the locker and get your gear. Avoid getting seen by the two civvies walking around. Then go toward the exit. Wait untill the guard in the side room is going to the back of the room, then go down into that room and take the other exit, which eventually leads you to the sewers. I believe it’s the northern-most sewers you want, it’ll pop you up in a small open area with a truck, and a uniform laying beside the truck. Stay in the sewer opening until the coast is clear, then run over and get that uniform. Then just walk out past the building (I’d suggest behind it), and to the appartments. Go up to the fourth floor, and make sure both the doors exiting the room with the open window are unlocked. Wait until you get all the info, and they tell you to make the shot, then do it, make sure you don’t hit anyone else. Exit the building, and walk back to any of the sewer entrances, and trace your steps back to the extraction point. Easy, done, Silent Assassin rating. The only difficulty is that you’re on a time limit, so you can’t waste too much time, but once you find out where everyone goes, you shouldn’t have much trouble getting there with 1-2 minutes spare.

The game does demand patience if you’re going to try for a good rating. Some of those missions go real quick, other can take forever, and have lots of small details you can use. And, er… I don’t mean to sound rude, but since there are plenty of people who seem to have an easy time beating the game (Hell, I’ve beaten the damn Japan missions with a SA rating…), maybe the problem isn’t the game… I mean, a game’s greatness is not dependant on how well you yourself can play it. In fact, some of the greatest games I’ve ever played were the ones that handed me my ass the first few times I played it, while I was sitting there with a shocked expression, thinking “What just happened?”

You make compelling arguments.

But I’m too proud.

The game sucks.

No, I know the game doesn’t suck, it just isn’t my cup-o-joe. I’m a dedicated racer – patience is not a virtue of mine.
I just redid the second level and was doing pretty good, until I got back to the station and spazzed out when I saw a guard. I ran out of ammo with my stolen AK and got shot down before I could whip out my balls … I mean Ballers.
Truthfully, the game itself impresses the hell out of me, it’s just a little too much like real life. Not enough room for mistakes to be fun for me.

I thought it was a great game once I abandoned any pretence of playing it properly. Quick hunt for the “all weapons” and “invincibility” cheats and suddenly those poor Russian guards, or the elite ninjas later on, are mincemeat.
