Video gamers playing Grand Theft Auto have discovered way to rape other characters

We’ve picked up on that.

Miller, I’m assuming you’re a gamer. Can you explain to me why players “assaulted” by this griefer can’t simply disconnect? I am not criticizing them; I literally do not understand.

They can. There might be some penalty imposed by the game such as a loss of progress (cash, equipment, experience points, leaderboard rankings, etc) but nothing is actually keeping them from disconnecting.

I’m speaking generally and not just for GTA Online since the answer is the same no matter the game.

The reason people weren’t disconnecting is likely a mixture of “they don’t really care (or are even somewhat amused)” and “the slight loss of progress is more upsetting than some animated humping”.

It’s a minor annoyance, not a sexual assault. Surely if people are really traumatized by it they would simply turn off the game or Quit. But when people purposely try to ruin your online gaming experience through cheats or annoying you repeatedly, it is pretty frustrating. You could disconnect, reconnect, and the guy would find you again and repeat.

What’s a cheat?

More to the point of the thread: If I understand GTA online correctly, are there not likely to be hundreds if not thousands of persons playing at any given moment? Can the griefer easily find you again?

A modification to the software that breaks something. For example, locking another player in a crouching position, disabling your own pants, and then “raping” them by moving slowly back and forth.

It’s a hack, basically.

The only way I can answer this is with… maybe.

Guess what? You can also KILL people in GTA games. Let’s hold Rockstar accountable for that too!

They can, of course.

But, aside from any minor loss of progress they may suffer, it’s an annoyance to have to do when you’re trying to play a game together.
Griefing is a problem in a lot of online games, on both consoles and PCs, and is a big reason why many people just don’t bother taking games online. Devs can put quite a lot of effort into preventing it, especially on games that are only online.
