Video gamers playing Grand Theft Auto have discovered way to rape other characters

<sigh> There’s some sick folks out there. Rockstar Games programmed these capabilities into the game. They need to be held accountable. imho

God Mode has been available in games for a long time. But that just means you have all capabilities programmed into the game. AFAIK you can’t create new powers.

Reddit thread: “I was butt raped online - literally,”

Breaking news: Griefers exist.

What’s the latest word on Generalissimo Francisco Franco?

 The reddit thread was created 5 days ago.

Its not old news AFAIK.

Sure, God Mode in games has been around forever.Griefers exploit it. This hack in Grand Theft Auto is new.

From the original Kotaku article you failed to read:

“And in case it wasn’t clear: these incidents are made possible because people are tampering with the game. Under normal circumstances, incidents such as the ones described in this post are not possible in GTA Online.”

Someone needs to either learn the meaning of “rape” or the meaning of “literally” because having your little cartoon man bend over while another cartoon man clumsily runs back and forth at his butt isn’t “raped – literally”.

Ignoring the whole sphere of developer modes, god modes, hacks, etc – held accountable for what? The Reddit topic links to some screenshots of a video game guy with his pants down sort of being behind other people (who don’t even have their pants down).

If this guy is using god mode or hacks or whatever to take control of other characters, he’s being a jerk but he’s not an actual rapist – he’s just a jerk griefing other players.

There’s no power to “rape”. There’s commands to dance or to squat/crouch and there’s people using “god mode” commands to force the other player’s character to enact those commands and making a crude approximation of sex out of it. This is far different than Rockstar having a secret “anal rape” command in the game.

edit: Looking at the linked article above, it’s even less of a Rockstar “at fault” thing since these are mods made by players to grief other players, not people using in-game commands.

I guess getting humped online is the ultimate pwn.

I’m glad that I never bought Grand Theft Auto.

This sounds pretty extreme even for griefing.

Okay, I don’t play video games, so maybe this is a stupid question. But what was preventing the victims in this scenario from just breaking the connection to the, ah, “perps,” and thus extricating their avatars or whatever as easily as Nightcrawler teleporting away from a bad date?

And if that was impossible for whatever reason, why didn’t the victim just turn off the monitor? Exit the program? Go to the kitchen and eat a bagel?

I’m not into gaming anymore either. I’m not sure what happens to a character if you just disconnect. I’ve heard the serious gamers invest a lot of time into their online characters/avatars.

Perhaps more knowledge players could explain the options and how to handle these situations online.

Why would you even care? I’m not being facetious; I just lack the gaming knowledge to understand why this is possibly an issue for anyone. It’s like someone complaining that, on a trip to the grocery store, a cashier repeatedly makes the sign of the cross just before going on shift and outside of anyone’s sight.

That’s a pity; several of the incarnations are really fantastic games, with interesting story lines, compelling characters, and incredibly fun and intricate worlds to rampage in.

So what if some hackers can grief players in the GTAOnline? It’s hardly the first time there’s been stuff like in online games. It won’t be the last time. But in any case, you don’t have to play online to enjoy GTA V (or any of others in the series).

I’ve seen a lot of online bullying over the years. Especially over on Usenet. It’s just as disturbing online as it is in the real world. There have been teenagers bullied through social media with tragic consequences.

I don’t claim to understand the gaming world either. This case caught my attention because of the circumstances. A total stranger enters a friendly online game uninvited. Attacks and intimidates players. Typical a-hole online bully hiding behind the anonymity of the net. They just want to ruin what should be a fun experience.

I don’t understand the impulse to do this either, at all. But it’s sadly pretty common.

Well, at least they’re aware of it in real time and don’t need to second-guess if it really happened. That’s a truth you need!

“he’s still dead!”[/GM]

Almost 40 years, and I remember them all…

If you’ve ever gamed then you should know gamers have been griefing each other since “kick the rock” was invented.

Not even remotely the same.

The only reason you noticed this is news sites picked it up from reddit and are using it to further their, “OMG Vidja games are ebil.”

I googled "gta online’ and the first half of the page was news sites complaining about it. Then the links got to the game.

From the guy who made the reddit post:

If you bothered to read the reddit thread you’d notice he was claiming how annoying the griefing guy was. The “rape” was just the way this guy was griefing and he had to cheat to do it. So no this has nothing to do with the developers.

I’ll let you in a more horrific tale of games. Did you know that in some games you can kill other characters!!! OMG!!!:eek::eek::eek::eek:

Gonna slide this over to the Game Room since it’s talking about games.

Humping things and showing nudity have been griefer strats for ages. This guy just got more creative in how he did it. Even the originator of the thread was calling it out as annoying, not as actually being remotely on par with rape.

Heck, there was even a sick sort of respect for the guy for having figured out how to do it. There are people in the thread that want to find the guy so they can see it for themselves.

Been a while since I played GTA Online, but I believe the game auto-saved frequently. A disconnect wouldn’t be too costly to the player if that’s the case.

It’s unfortunate that there are people out there amusing themselves this way, but as others have already said, it’s not literally rape. Don’t get me wrong, I’d be beyond pissed if someone pulled that on me, but I wouldn’t be traumatized. I would sincerely wish great harm upon the douche, though. Then I would eventually calm down and just wish for a more minor harm to be visited upon him. A really painful cold sore, perhaps.
