Video games based on Gulf War II: Let's Speculate...

At the very least, I think we’ll see some kind of first person shooter in which you have to shoot the Bad Guys, but not the Innocent Civilians. But the Bad Guys are masquerading as Innocent Civilians. The higher the difficulty level, the harder it is to tell them apart. Kill too many I.C.s and political support for the war evaporates, you have to withdraw, and you lose.

Not sure about strategy games and other genres. What do you folks think?

IIRC, C&C Generals has a mission where the US fights the GLA(Global Liberation Army-basically a bunch of terrorist) in Bagdad.

Remember, CnC Generals was made about 6 months before the war outbreak, it wasn’t eactly as if they were cashing in.

How about Baghdad Tycoon? Commit random acts of violence on a captive populance and avoid UN backed war! Build huge statues in your name! Gather international support while beating the crap out of you population!

Before anyone asks, yes, it is a bad taste joke…

There’s a Desert Combat mod (version .3 has been made public just today) for Battlefield 1942 which has modern weaponry and vehicles. The two sides (rather than being Japanese vs American, or British vs Italian, or Russian vs German, etc) are Opposition vs Coalition, yet the Opposition flag is Iraqi and the skins are decidedly middle-eastern. There’s no single player game to it, purely the multiplayer version of Battlefield 1942.

I’m of mixed emotions playing it. It’s one thing to blow up a Sherman tank with a panzerschrek while dressed as a German soldier, it’s another to shoot down an Apache with an RPG as an Iraqi soldier.

Or maybe if I play it some more I’ll desensitize myself and can proudly brag about the five frags I had when I ambushed a Humvee.

I bet you there’ll be a Medal of Honor game withinn a few years. The War on Terror is doin plenty of good for the series, because you know they’re desperate for historical military actions when they start doing Grenada and Panama.

Steel Panthers 2 had a “Battle of Baghdad” Scenario, if I Recall.

And a couple months ago, there was an “Invasion: Iraq”, game if I’m not mistaken.

And back in 1992, there was an SNES game called “Desert Strike”, which was kinda like the gulf war, but with a single Apache chopper, a couple commando teams, and a frigate as the entirely of the American Force.

The biggest strategy game to come out of Gulf War 1.0 was “Patriot,” brought to you by Three-Sixty. It was supposed to be the land version of “Harpoon.”

It was possibly the worst video game ever made. I have never heard of anybody, not a single person, who could figure out how to control it. It was impervious to comprehension or alteration of its course. It was as if it was a giant, secret experiment in what would happen if you deliberately wrote a software program to be impossible to use, understand, or enjoy.

So I’ll tell you this; I don’t know what the biggest game to come out of Gulf War 2.0 will be, but DON’T buy shares in the company that produced it. Three-Sixty went belly up as a result of “Patriot.”

Followed up by “Jungle Strike” and then “Urban Strike”. And no, I don’t think the American forces got any larger.

Personally, I’m expecting a game along the lines of “Liberation : Iraq”. See, you’re not invading, you’re liberating. As well as Iraqi troops, you also spend some time getting involved in friendly fire incidents.

Ah, the first person who couldn’t resist politicizing the thread. I knew it would come eventually.
