I have mixed feelings about this game. The fact that it’s been in production for so long tells me that they’re putting a fair amount of effort into it, but I’m thinking that the development time might prove to be its greatest problem. Besides the fact that people are impatient for it, the things the staff have been promising have already been done exceptionally well (driveable vehicles–Halo took care of that; awesome graphics–Doom 3 seems to have that and more). On top of that, with such a long development, people are going to expect the greatest game since…well, since forever, and might very well be disappointed that it won’t be up to their over-the-top anticipations. And finally, the system specs seem to be something both vulgar and rediculous, going to be made moreso as more time passes. (Check out their site for all the cites you’ll ever need.)
Personally, I think it’ll be a good game, maybe the best shooter in a long time–but so many excellent games will have been out for so long that the things Duke promises might not be as great as they might have been a few years ago.
It seems as though I’ve been waiting 3+ years for the next 3d Duke adventure on the PC. It has been in development for so long and delayed so many times I don’t expect it to be a good game at all. If I’m lucky I’ll be pleasantly surprised.
I’ll be surprised if it ever comes out at all. Same deal with Team Fortress 2 (wasn’t that the E3 game of the show in like, 1998?).
Based on previous experience (especially Daikatana), I think if the game ever does come out, it’s going to be craptacular.
And hey, are we ever going to get another Half-Life game or what? That game had the worst ending in the history of games, and they haven’t even announced a sequel yet.

Wha?.. the ending was interesting indeed, especially if you took the time to figure out what Nilhanth was saying
The final boss you kill may well have been a GOOD guy, while the man you work for at the end (he isn’t human, whatever he is) was whatever the aliens were trying to PROTECT you from)
I really wish there would be another Half-Life: it was one of the best games of its era, surpassed only by Deus Ex.
It should be fun, if it ever comes out. Even at the time Duke 3D came out, it wasn’t really head-of-the-class in the cutting edge technology department.
What made the game fun, IMHO, were the things that set it apart - freeze guns, shrink rays (though they could have both been implemented better), the laser mines, adult book stores, strip clubs, getting health from using the bathroom every once in a while, and, of course, Duke mouthing off now and then, blatantly stealing lines from Army of Darkness.
You can then listen to the sound clips that Nil has in the game:
“I don’t like you alone (unintelligible) alone”
“Here’s(?) another”
“Deceive you will deceive you”
“Die you will die you will die”
“Done what have you done”
“Freeeeeeeeeemaaaannnnnnn”
“The last the last you are”
“You are man he is not man. For you he waits. For you.”
“Now die. Now die. Now.”
“They’re slaves to we are they we are”
“The last. I am the last.”
“The truth. You can never know the truth.”
“Thieves. You are our thieves. You all are.”
“Win you cannot win”
Strange stuff: definately keeping me hungry to find out more about the story, especially in light of the add-ons to half-life that imply that there are much nastier alien races involved in whatever is happening as well…
My beef with the ending to Half-Life was mainly that the Xen levels were when they figured, “Aw fuck it, we have to ship this game sooner or later,” and just made a bunch of jumping puzzles. The ending really gave you no answers about anything and left you wondering way too much about what was really going on. And that’s just made even more inexcusable since we haven’t heard a peep about a sequel–makes me think they wrote themselves into a corner.
