Duke Nukem Forever

Who knew this meant that it would take forever to release?

I was just looking for a new game and I thought: “Hey, how long has it been since the last Duke Nukem?” I figured it was probably at least 5 years and probably 7 (more?)

Does anyone care anymore? Will anyone of you buy it?

It’ll probably be the next Daikatana.

Ug! Don’t remind me. I bought that crap-in-a-box and never did get it to run, despite having tried it on several computers.

Well, Quake 2 came out in '97 I think, and Duke 4ever was announced around then so its been at least 5½ years!

If its a good game, and I mean unbelievably good, then it can succeed. But I don’t see how it possibly could be good enough.

I get the feeling the programmers are caught in an endless ‘development loop’. When it was announced in '98 they were gonna use the Q2 game engine. Then UnReal came out and they switched to that. Then they were gonna write their own (I think). By the time they ‘lock the game’ and then finish the code their engine is always no longer cutting edge!

Basically all they have now is the ‘Duke Nukem’ name, and that’s fast becoming forgotten!

I hated Duke Nukem 3D. Give me the old Apogee platformer any day.

Or the next Ultima IX.

Yikes!

So John Romero didn’t make you his bitch? Or did he? Hmmm…

Well of course it’ll be good. I mean, hell, after switching to the Doom 3 engine, it can’t possibly suck!

Yes, I am kidding.

I’ve always theorized that the development time has mostly been hoping for another Evil Dead film to get released, so Duke can get some new dialogue.

Besides the tech problem, I think a lot of us who were waiting for the game from the beginning are probably getting sick of old-style shooter gameplay, which is probably what DNF is going to offer. I personally am much more intersted in deeper, smarter games than prettier graphics, and would probably not find another system-hog shooter worth the wait. On the other hand, maybe the fact that those of us who are getting “old” are being replaced by new teenagers will make up for this fact.

LOL. My feeling exactly.

I agree. They had a name and didn’t capitalize on it. That name is fading and I don’t think they’ll get the following that they would have. Unless, as you said, it is REALLY good. Of course, we now find that “When its done” means “probably never.”

Eveyone biatches about Duke Nukem Forver, but how about Team Fortress 2? That’s got to have been in development almost as long.

My thoughts exactly ElwoodCuse, I’ve been waiting for both of these games for far too long.

Fun little story - A year after Team Fortress 1 came out or so, I drove to Tulsa, Oklahoma for a 3 day TF festival. The inventors of the mod were all there, fresh off a flight from Australia. I got to play TF with the f*cking makers of the mod!!! Such a great day in my life. We saw some early footage of TF2, heard their talk about being picked up by Valve, spent way too much time at Denny’s with them, etc. I’ve still got the Team Fortress 2 long sleeved tee autographed by their whole team.

Anyways, back to some kind of point. I think this was at least 5 years ago, maybe more. WTF is holding up Duke and TF2? My guess, they keep changing the game engine and have to rebuild the entire game each time they do. There’s missing the boat, and then there is missing the boat . Both of these games are in this… err… same… umm… boat.

wishing he had something other then a boat analogy
