Is there a list available of every Viewmaster disc? I would like to know how many movies, cartoons and tv series have been depicted on those discs.
I think getting such a thing might be nigh on impossible. I recall some outfits, way back in the Dark Ages when I was a kid addicted to the thing, making custom discs. And, of course, there were copycats that fit the original.
Just to be clear, are you talking about this?
I’m into a rabbit hole now. This site claims there were over a billion reels issued and that it is has as comprehensive a list as possible but it’s working very slowly for me at the moment: http://www.3dstereo.com/Viewmaster-URL/
EDIT: give it a while and the pages do load eventually…
Some Auto manufacturers used to create specialty View-Master disks of their car models, for dealerships.
Cool idea, BTW.
If you had a 3D camera, I had a Realist, you could get blank disks and a punch to create your own content.
I had several disks featuring seven-frame adventure “episodes” of a child’s cartoon character Sam Sawyer. I think he travels to the moon in one.
When I was a kid I got a talking Viewmaster for Christmas, from my Grandma. I was really excited to get it, but the sound didn’t work. My dad took it apart and it turned out a little plastic arm that had a record player needle at the end of it had broken, so he tried to glue it together. But it didn’t hold.
A fun song about Viewmasters (and other toys remembered by those of us of a certain age)
I’m gonna cry if I can’t find my View Master
Etch-a-Sketch me a pretty picture
Go Speed Racer go a little faster
I could hear the voices of my childhood
When I traded in my Close and Play for a second-hand guitarI was straining to hear, I was straining to reach them
But Stretch Armstrong couldn’t stretch that far
