I’m glad to know I’m not the only person who has a mind that works like that!
Only I was thinking of porn star names, not pride names. But still…
For a color scheme, the Violet Crumble comes in a glossy, deep purple package with bright yellow lettering, with the statement “It’s the way it shatters that matters!” on the outside. The Cherry Ripes are in a vivid red bag.
I have had the Pollywaffle mhendo. Back when I first had the Australian candies, in the International Candy Exchange on this board, I got a wonderful variety that included the Pollywaffle, the Jaffas, the Cherry Ripes, and some more. The only one I didn’t care for was some kind of pink sticks, the color of bubblegum, that smelled like roses, sort of. Can’t remember the name. But all of the rest, in a very generous selection, were great!
Oh, I do. My good friend was raised in country NSW and she loves them. Keeps them on her person almost always, has some in her desk all the time. I had never seen them before I moved to Sydney from the US and she sprang them on me without explanation.
They are horrible, and taste like bad perfume smells. Ugh!
Baker, I think I know a place you can get all kinds of candy as you describe. In Lawrence, there’s an import food/gift shop called “Brits”. It’s on Massachusetts St (around 9th). It’s connected with another food shop called “Au Marche”.
I’m not sure why, but Violet Crumbles are easy to find in Oregon. Plaid Pantry tends to stock them and I’ve found them in 7-11s too. I like Pocky sticks, the chocolate ones. I got hooked on them when I lived in Japan as a kid and it was years before Asian stores got prevalent enough to feed my habit. Now they’re available all over, thank Og…
I’m in California, and I see Violet Crumble all the time, including in drugstores like Long’s. The most consistent place I’ve seen it is at Cost Plus World Imports, where they have all sorts of nifty international candy. If you’ve got one in your area, try there.
Yeah, i was also about to post about the ease of finding Violet Crumbles in California. My wife’s from San Francisco, and whenever we go back there to visit her mother, i pick up some violet crumbles at Cost Plus. There’s also a candy place in North Beach, i think on Columbus, that sells them.
I note the people saying you can buy things locally, but there is always something special about a parcel that arrives for you from overseas. It is the sense of not knowing what is inside, as well as someone else has thought highly enough of you to send something.
I love getting parcels from my Internet friends in the USA, even if they contain nothing more than jelly beans. They are special.
Apparently Musk lollies are an acquired taste. They are popular in Australia and South Africa but not many other of the Colonies, and more popular with females than males in both countries.
I too have seen them all over. They’re one of my sister’s favorites.
There’s also a candy store here in Pasadena that makes them. They do both the dark chocolate covered ones and the more pointless milk chocolate covered ones. So Baker, you just need to come to California on vacation!
I tried a Violet Crumble for the first time in ages today (because of this thread, natch). The filling is better than a Crunchie, but I can’t get past the compounded chocolate: it’s horrible.
The Sydney Kings basketball team were dubbed the Violet Crumbles in 1995 - they play in purple and gold livery and were, at the time, notorious for raising the hopes of their fans before failing in spectacular fashion.
