Has anyoine installed a virtual pc on an iMac? Did it work? Where can order virtual pc?
I installed Virtual PC on my iMac (333) and found it to be even slower than I imagined. It works, but don’t go expecting to play Quake II or something…
As for where to buy, I just walked into MicroCenter. I’d imagine you could find it at CompUSA or whatever computer chain curses your local landscape. Not sure where to go online to buy it.
A caveat: you’re buying nothing but the operating system. If you wanna write in Word for PC (god forbid) you gotta shell out the extra clams.
MisterBK:
You must have done something wrong in your installation (or maybe there’s something peculiar about the iMac, but I doubt it). Virtual PC on my 300MHz Mac MiniTower outperformed my 366MHz Dell in most of the benchmarks I threw at it.
Instead of hijacking, I posted a new thread here about MicroCenter. Check it out!
MisterBK,
It occured to me later that you probably don’t have enough RAM in your iMac. If that were the case, Virtual PC would be running with virtual memory. This is definitely NOT a recommended approach. When I run Virtual PC, I give it a really big partition (I think 64MB).
Thanks, JoeyBlades. I may indeed have screwed up the install. RAM’s okay; I’ve got 96 MB (real, not virtual mem) on the iMac and threw 64 of 'em into VirtualPC.
Next time I’m home–work has me on an extended stay in Chicagoland–I may try to reinstall and see if I can’t get some better results. Luckily, I barely use the software anymore, so this is more of an academic exercise. I appreciate your input.
