Visiting NYC/St John's University Law School

Long time lurker, (six years ) first time poster. Ahem.

During the last week of March, I’ll be paying my first visit to New York City! It will be a three day visit, and I wanted to solicit some advise on any attractions I should visit while I’m there. I’m already aware of the official NYC tourism website, however, the most of the attractions listed on the website are centered around the Manhattan area. Since time will be relatively short, I’m mostly interested in things I can do in Queens. Most of my day will revolve around an admitted student, open house session at St John’s University (I’ve been accepted into their law school). The law school is located in Jamaica, Queens, so I don’t think I’ll have much time to spend in Manhattan. I typically enjoy fine art/theater, museums, and visiting historical sites. Can anyone out there in Dopeland offer any advice on things to see or do in Queens? Does anyone know anything about the Jamaica area?

Also, does anyone know much about St John’s University? I’ve already read everything on their official website, but I’m looking more so for anecdotal information. What’s the school’s overall reputation in New York? Thanks!

I’m originally from NYC, and had a lot of friends that went to St. John’s for Law and many other things (Pharmacy, Nursing, etc)

The Law program is pretty well-received across the board - most people know St. John’s Law when they hear it. Good school, and close enough to go to Manhattan to party on weekends!

Oh, and FYI - I wouldn’t go wandering around Jamaica, NY if you don’t have to - the St. John’s campus if fine, but the areas outside campus is well…eh. Head to Astoria for tons of great restaurants and bars if youre not looking to travel to the city or pay NYC prices. Ask around when you get on campus - lots of the students there are local/commuters, so theyll be able to tell you good places to go without spending a gajillion dollars.

Good luck and have fun!

GO RED STORM!!!

If you have a car you might want to drive over to [Flushing Meadown Park](If you have a car you might want to drive over to – there’s the 1964 World’s Fair Unisphere, the the Queens Museum of Art (and its amazing diorama of NYC’s five boroughs), the New York Hall of Science, among other things.) – there’s the 1964 World’s Fair Unisphere, the the Queens Museum of Art (and its amazing diorama of NYC’s five boroughs), the New York Hall of Science, among other things.

Just down the pathway from the Unisphere in the National Tennis Center, where the U.S. Open is played. You can get access to the grounds (if you’re interested in just walking the grounds where greats play), but the entrance that is open will require a wee bit of walking from the one directly down from the sphere.

SJU has a much better reputation in NYC than it does nationally. Probably just because of its size and the fact that it’s been around so long. If you’re looking to stay in NYC after law school it’s not a bad bet. Lots of successful NYC lawyers went there.

Jamaica’s not the world’s most exciting place. If you like ethnic food, head to Flushing for any number of different kinds of Asian food (Flushing Meadow Park is close by as well). Jamaica does have a good-sized Caribbean population, so there are some restaurants and ethnic food stores there, on Jamaica Avenue. The main branch of the Queens public library is there too–I spent HOURS there as a kid.

Jamaica is also home to the main Queens County Supreme Court building.

I went to Brooklyn Law School, so I can’t speak much about the school, only that it has an excellent reputation and one of my authors (I’m an editor at a legal publishing company) teaches estates law there and she is awesome.
