visiting Vancouver BC in Sept

I will be visiting Vancouver BC in late September. It will be a vacation. Any suggestions on what I should plan for? I have approximately 3 days in the city. I am already planning a day trip to Victoria. Just because I can.

Thanks

Do you like football? Check out BC Lions’ September schedule and see if there’s a game.

Sadly, you won’t see the cream of the CFL, as the Sask Roughriders aren’t playing in BC in late September.

I was there this past September. The weather was fantastic.

There is no Uber so be prepared for long lines for cabs if flying in.

I stayed at a small casino next to BC Place and there was not too much to do there. Seems all the action is north along the Burand Inlet with restaurants, shopping and beautiful views.

I didn’t get a chance to go there but everyone says Vancouver Island is fantastic.

Thanks!

  1. Depending on your luggage and where you’re staying, taking the Skytrain downtown may be an option. It is definitely my preference relative to a cab, but YMMV.
  2. Granville Island is a good place to check out for half a day or so. It’s a bit separated from downtown - under one of the main bridges that connect downtown to the rest of the city- It has a gourmet / farmers market / restaurants, as well as bunch of shops, buskers, annoying seagulls and whatnot. You can readily walk there from some parts of the city, and there are adorable sea taxis that go from Granville island to one side of down town, so you could do Granville island / yaletown as a chunk of a nice noodle around kind of day.
  3. Do the Aquarium and Stanley Park as another half day or more.

Ambling around downtown is nice, but it’s a lot like other big cities.

Where are you staying? That will help plan things out.

If you have a car, I’d suggest a daytrip to Lynn Canyon, not very far north of the city. A suspension bridge across the canyon, and plenty of trails through the rainforest. It’s popular with locals, but not terribly well-known to tourists, so it is never very crowded, especially on weekdays.

A little farther out of town is Whistler, another nice daytrip. Along the way, you can stop and see Brandywine Falls. Whistler village is interesting to explore; there are the usual tacky souvenir shops, but there are some nice places to have lunch, and the scenery is stunning.

Other than those, in the city itself, I often spent Saturday mornings sitting outside in a cafe on Robson Street, with coffee and a newspaper. The newspaper was a dodge; it was more interesting and fun to people-watch.

It’s a great city. Have a fun time!

Stanley Park & the Aquarium
Chinatown - especially the Sun Yat Sen garden
Museum of Anthropology
Granville Island
Grouse Mountain - just across the harbor, it has the Grouse Grind (a strenuous hike up the mountain) or you can cable car to the top for shows, milder hiking, etc.

I agree that the downtown is a lot like other cities. The Gastown area has a somewhat historic feel, and there are more good restaurants in the city than you can shake a stick at.

I recommend the Okonomi, the Oroshi and the Kurobuta Terimayo

If you like interesting architecture, just walk through the courthouse for the BC Supreme Court and Court of Appeal. It’s an entire block long, and one wall is actually the roof, glass, at an angle. (I suck at describing buildings that aren’t cubes.).

One of the courtrooms is a re-creation of a courtroom from the old courthouse: late Victorian in style.

And there are Canada Geese that nest on the roof/wall supports in spring. One time I was arguing a case there and the geese were honking outside. We called them the courtwarchers.

Then after walking through the courthouse atrium keep going down the street to the old courthouse, which is now the local art gallery.

If we’re talking architecture, check out the library.

Quite right. Had forgotten about that. Well worth a wander.

Thanks all.
I appreciate the inputs.
We look forward to our visit.
