My wife’s Vista Laptop has no sound nor DVD. Are there new drivers that will fix this problem or do I need to get a repair?
Did it work before and then stop working?
What brand and model is the laptop?
Yes, first the sound quit and says that it isn’t connected. Now, the DVD player doesn’t even show as being there. HP Pavilion dv6990la notebook. Windows Vista Home Premium SP2.
Go to the HP site and search for drivers by your specific laptop model number. HP’s site is pretty good for this kind of stuff. Usually you can just download executable files that do all the installation for you. Just be sure to reboot after.

Sound - maybe the config is messed up, you may have to reset the config in the control panel, sound area…
or remove the driver from the device manager, and then trigger the detection (“scan for hardware changes”. Which also means 'try to add the just removed drivers back in '. )
IF the drivers won’t restore, then perhaps they are corrupt and you need a to download the package.
But its unlikely that you just need new drivers for no reason… or just because of windows upset.
Perhaps you do for sound - very unlikely for the DVD to need a driver.
Maybe get a dos prompt (cmd.exe) as administrator, and run “sfc /scannow”
I gave up and gave the computer to a friend. Let him worry about the problem or just get it repaired. Oh, I had just reinstalled the system, so I believe that it is something with the hardware. Anyway, case closed.
