I have a desktop workstation that has VMWare Player which has 2 instances with Windows XP as the OS for the instances. Do to some software I work with and various releases I need to get VM Ware instances with Windows 7 up and running.
Is this possible with VMWare Player or do I have to upgrade to another product ?
What about licensing? All on the same physical box. Does this require another purchase of Windows 7 ?
It’s difficult to say if you need to upgrade VMWare without knowing what version VMWare you are using and what your host machine is.
If your existing VMWare will run XP then it should run the 32 bit version of Windows 7.
If you want to run the 64 bit version of Windows 7 in the virtual machine (which most people do) then you need to be on a 64 bit host. There may be some BIOS settings that you’ll need to tweak in order to make it work, depending on how your machine is configured.
As for licensing, the virtual machine is for all practical purposes another separate computer (even though it is emulated). It will not share a license with the host.
