Voices of Trump's supporters

New York Times video.
If you don’t want to hear the anger, ethnic slurs, and hate-filled language, leave your sound off-- the text is displayed on the screen.

“Deplorables?” “Irredeemable?” I’d say so.

NOT saying ALL Trump supporters are this extreme, but hundreds are. I fear millions are.

“As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.”
― H.L. Mencken

Uncannily apt.

Just sayin’, I thought this issue has been pretty much beyond argument ever since large numbers of the crowd were shown chanting “Lock her up” at the Republican Convention.

I find if hard to believe that half of the US is populated by morons. But, apparently that’s true.

I think the conclusion that HALF of the country can be characterized this way is unwarranted. The current estimated population of the USA is 322 million. I certainly don’t think fully HALF of them (161 million) fall into this cesspool of vitriol.

But it’s alarming that there are SO MANY full of hatred, intolerance, rage at the “other,” etc. The fact that there are hundreds, thousands, and possibly millions is alarming. And this campaign has given them a champion and also permission and venues where they can spew their rage safely with other like-minded people. While the rest of us stare.

Getting a bunch of maroons all in a bunch is deceptive. And precisely why Trump prefers rallies to any other form of masturbation.

You’re right. Thanks for that glimmer of hope.

Mrs. Clinton never said ‘half the country’, but you are far from alone in thinking that’s what she said.

[QUOTE=Hillary Clinton]
You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic – you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people – now 11 million. He tweets and retweets their offensive hateful mean-spirited rhetoric. Now, some of those folks – they are irredeemable, but thankfully they are not America."

Where did you get the idea I was citing Hillary? I was responding to this comment from enipla:

Maybe it’s half as in “50.001% of voters.” Which can’t be true.

It’s definitely not half. Millions of non-Trump supporters are probably morons, too, so more like 60%!

We’ve already experienced that. Two terms later, we still haven’t fully recovered.

Mencken didn’t consider that it could get even worse.

Yeah, somehow that didn’t register. Add one more to the “moron” column. :smack:

As I’ve said before, I don’t think the best way to push against Trump is to promote the quotes of (an admittedly erudite) reactionary racialist, Confederate sympathizer, and anti-Semite who said this in contrast to the old traditions of aristocratic rule by “natural superiors”. It’s not as if he’d be anymore enamoured of the bourgeois social liberalism and the Negro/mestizo/Oriental support base of Hillary Clinton.

:dubious:

That sounds a lot like a “Hitler ate Sugar” argument.

As I type, I’m watching the documentary “The Other Side”. For the first ten minutes or so, I thought it was one of those weird indie movies like “Gummo”, because it was so over-the-top “poor white trash”. Everyone in it hates the black nigger coon Obama and his whore Hillary.

But it’s a documentary, not fictional. Everyone in it is unfortunately real.

Yes, they are poor and uneducated and victims of capitalism. But they are deplorable all the same. I’m trying to find something likeable about these stupid, ugly people and I’m coming up short.

Yes, it’s easy to tell where they are too. That’s why they have red and blue states on maps.

Uh, ummm…

They like sugar?

I love dogs, and the music of Beethoven and Wagner…so I’d at least have something to talk to Hitler about if he asked me over for dinner.

I also love Jews, Slavs, liquor, Czechs, jazz music, meat, loud feminists, tobacco, and homosexuals, but I would steer the conversation away from those subjects.
