25,00 people on the run.
OG!
The whole country must be punch-drunk on tragedy by now!

Earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanoes, oh my!
What in great Og’s name is going on over there?
It’s what’s going on under there, that’s the issue.
That teutonic plate is breaking up. That area of the world is probably in for long-term woes.

The thing about living in the Ring of Fire, is that you have to put up with earthquakes and volcanos. They’re not unusual, but they sure can be a pain in the arse! (Actually, I quite enjoyed the earthquakes in SoCal.)
When Krakatoa erupted in 1883, it wiped out about 36,000 people; most of them with the tsunamis it created. As it happens, Krakatoa is building up again. The new island is called Anak Krakatau. No doubt that eventually ‘The Son of Krakatoa’ will have a similar catastrophic eruption to Krakatoa’s – only this time there are a lot more people in its way.
[sub]Incidentally, the 1969 movie got it wrong. Krakatoa is actually west of Java. [/sub]
That one’s in Northern Europe, innit?
Won’t somebody please think of the Aryans!
Except that Sumatra, of course, is on the Indian Ocean whereas the “Ring of Fire” refers to the Pacific Ocean.
Serves me right for not previewing.
True; but it’s right there where the Indian Ocean, the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea come together. This site depicts the ‘Ring of Fire’ as including Java. Map.
When I have a ring of fire, I use Preperation H.
*I fell in to a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down and the flames went higher.
And it burns, burns, burns, the ring of fire
the ring of fire
*
Java isn’t Sumatra. But you knew that.
I’ve never seen the Ring of Fire depicted as extending as far west as Sumatra. But I note that the map you linked to seems to have been ripped-off from the USGS website, so I guess they should know what they’re talking about.
Me either. That map looks less like The Ring of Fire and more like The Duck of Fi… err… The Duck of Death!.
Funny, that map shows a big red dot labeled “Challenger Deep”.
Haven’t I heard of that before? For about 20 minutes, in 1960?
Yeah, they have sweaters to knit!
And another volcano erupting on Comoros
I wonder what continuing affect all these tragedies are going to have on the psyches of the people. Between the volcanoes, tsunamies, and earthquakes, it must feel like they’re being targeted by an angry god.
**GOD ** slap IS slap PISSED slap
But really, those poor people out there are really having a bad year. I bet whatever money Indonesia was getting from tourism is going to drop down to absolute zero thanks to all these natural disasters.
When I heard about the volcano last week, I made another little charity donation. Not a whole lot, but there’s not much else I can do.
A link for those who don’t want to register at the other site.
Depends. Did that cup of Java come from a McDonalds?
That’s what happens when Thor starts swingin’ that hammer a bit carelessly.
