Voldemort's appearance/SFX (open spoilers)

Just saw “Goblet of Fire” and liked it a lot. Ralph Fiennes made a very effective and creepy Voldemort, I thought. Especially his nose… or lack thereof. How did they do that? Looked like he had no nose at all, just two little snakelike slits. Was it removed through digital imagery? Did Fiennes play all those scenes with a big greenscreen patch over his nose, which was removed frame by frame?

I actually didn’t think the nose was creepy… I found it hilarious actually…
I really have no idea how they did it though, it was quite odd.

I saw the movie as a test screening in July before most of the special effects were done, and he had green and/or blue (it’s been so long I can’t remember) dots all over his face. So yes, most of his face was digital. Personally, though I loved the movie both times I saw it, I preferred the July Voldemort to the November Voldemort. He was much scarier.

I was let down; it makes Voldemort look less human, which may be true if you’ve read book 6. I prefer the idea that he’s just a really angry human, not so weird looking.

Really, I’m critiquing the books as well, since they describe him having that snake-like nose. I think the nose thing just takes away from the character.

It’s like that old MST3K3 episode(Manos, the Hands of Fate) where Joel suggests a person with no nose would qualify as a monster.

What other changes did you notice from the screening?

I am so envious.

He looked too much like a Star Trek villain for me to take seriously.

At first, I found it distracting; when he first appeared, Voldemort was largely unformed, and fleshed out over a few minutes. I was expecting a nose to grow as the last step. Then I realized they were trying to make him look like a snake.

poit!

See?

No, they came perilously close to running out of money for the special effects, unfortunately, so to save money, they removed Mr. Fiennes’ nose through **actual ** surgery.

Talk about giving your all for your art.
