Now, except for the obvious… what do I do with a mark of AH.
/me sees a conspiracy.
I seriously dig their commercials. Very entertaining, each and every one.
Mr. Ben’s Passat Schwagen is named Otto. We’ve also got Octi (Turbo Beetle) and the Tick (Cabriolet). My first car was a Jetta that I named Turtle. Oh, and Montfort’s Golf was Olaf.
Sometimes you gotta think about the name, other times the car tells you what it’s name is. Tick was named before I even got it home for the first time. Don’t know why, but as I was driving it home, thinking about names, “Tick” popped into my mind and stuck there. Some weird VW mind reading thing, I guess. :dubious:
Exactly so, Arky. Exactly so. I’d test driven four or five Accord/Camry kind of cars, but nothing grabbed me. About ten seconds after I put the Passat in first, I knew I was going to buy it. V6, leather, great stereo, all around loaded, and still came in under $30 even after TT&L. I’ve driven in a few new BMW’s since then, and none of them could touch the Passat.
I’m in. '99.5 Canyon Red Jetta GLS VR6 (automatic… danged wife) with leather seats with bun heaters. Key says HAA! We’ve had it since late September, and I still get a silly grin every time I get in.
I have a '97 Cabrio. Great car, just turned over 100K miles last week, runs like a watch. Only problem is the shift linkage problem mentioned earlier in the thread, and my driver’s side door has a dent in it where someone backed into it.
I’ve got a '72 superbeetle sitting on cinder blocks in my side yard right now, waiting to be restored. I love the thing to death, but my large frame prevents me from enjoying it comfortably without ripping out the backseat like Hightower in Police Academy.
Of course, most of you guys are talking about those fancy-schmancy “water-cooled” veedubs.
Bah.
My thoughts exactly. I drive a 1977 Transporter (van), my roommate has a '68 Karmann Ghia, her boyfriend has a 1973 Super Beetle, and the girl that I am currently lusting after drives a '72 Beetle. The front of our house looks like a used VW sales lot.
butler1850, my keys say “AH” too. Are our cars long-lost twins?
The back of the key says “Witte Velbert.” Velbert is intriguing, because it sounds like a combination of Velma and Dilbert, but it is a little dorky for my car. I like Otto, but am trying to come up with something using “AH”.
Velma - I’m trying to come up with a name for you with AH… thinking thinking. Help me out a little, is you car a boy or a girl? One can usually decide that before one feels a name. From your possibilities Velbert and Otto, I’m thinking boy, but thought I’d ask. Hmm… AH… I’m thinking Al. Al Horwicks. You can just call him Al. I don’t know.
How about Archimedes? It’s distinguishing, and quite regal, perfect for a VW…
It’s a boy, but a sexy boy. Not in a testosterone-laden male muscle car way. Understated.
It came with a European license plate on the front, with the letters VMC, so that could be a possibility as well…
Previous car names just sort of ‘happened’, this car is proving more difficult and mysterious. I’ll try out the names suggested and see if he likes any of them.
OMG. right as I was about to hit submit, the name came to me. Alfred. Alfred Hitchcock. Masculine, and mysterious. Plus I love his movies.
So I can still call him Al, Antares! And of course, the VMC stands for VelMa’s Car.
I love V-Dubs. Always have. Our first family car was a metallic blue Automatic golf which was incredibly reliable and soon became part of the family. We named her “Aziza”, which is an arabic word for “old woman”. Somehow it just seemed right…
Anyway we sold her off to a college buddy of mine, and were saddened to learn of her untimely demise at the hands of a lorry only a year or so later (sniff!)
I have since becaome infatuated with the idea of owning a VW Camper Van, and was delighted to fing out that they still make these new! Check out http://www.beetles-uk.com/camper.html .
However, I only have an automatic licence ( I live in the UK), so does anyone know if I can find a NEW camper in automatic? Help me out here, fellow V-Dub fans!
I owned a black '97 Jetta GT but only had if for 5 months before wrecking it in an accident. It was a great car and the GT sport package, I believe, only appeared a few years.
Although I now drive a '00 Accord, I still miss the Jetta.
I have a New Beetle (yellow, of course, because yellow beetles rock) and I LOVE it. When I first got it, someone would comment on it or give me the thumbs up pretty much every time I drove it. They are more commonplace now, so it attracts less attention, but I still smile every time I drive it. And by the way, the ceiling is high–I have a 6’5" friend who fits in it without any trouble.
We went to the Detroit auto show and got to sit in a convertible. Very sweet car, although the trunk space (hey, the roof has to go SOMEWHERE) is small. I doubt we will get one, though, because I intend to keep my yellow baby until I die and two bugs is a bit much.
I have a 2001 and a half passat and adore it. It tels me everything that is wrong with the world ranging from “It’s really cold out there!” to “feed me” to “STOP! You don’t have any coolant fluid and it’s 20 degrees out here, you are going to hurt something.” all of which I really appreciate. When I go home and drive my dad’s truck I always almost run out of gas because I am so used to my car alerting me of it’s needs.
The commercials are brilliant as well. I am a true convert to the VW club.
BTW, anyone know where to find one of those “Driver found.” bumper stickers? I have never ever wanted to put a sticker on my car of any kind, but I think that is so clever. (in the exact font as the tagline, Drivers wanted.)
My husband is an auto mechanic who specializes in VWs. He works on other imports and domestic cars as well, but the VW is his specialty. He’s always loved VWs and we currently own 4 of them. His 64 Beetle (for the year he was born), 2 Jettas (88 and 86) and a 66 Karmann Ghia that he bought for the bargian price of $150 and plans to fully restore someday. We’re currently considering selling my gas-guzzling Jeep Cherokee and putting me in a diesel Rabbit. One or both of the Jettas will eventually be sold, but for now he’s enjoying the heating and cooling aspects of the Jetta that he doesn’t have in his Beetle.
I’ve always been partial to American classic muscle cars, but my husband is slowly converting me to a VW fan.
Oh God!! From looking at past threads…It appears we need a good name…
I’m thinking: Alice
But the initials on the key say huf, so I am thinking of course it means the car should be named Huff. But Mrs.Phlosphr doesn’t smoke anything so maybe it should be named Gaviltafish… Nope she doesn’t like that…,… shit, so what should we name HER.
I’ve only owned a used Rabbit (which got totalled in the rain) but I liked it.
But the reason I’m posting to this thread is because when we moved into our house, FriendBill helped immensely by fitting nearly all our furniture into his VW hatchback (sorry, I can’t remember the model).
Now, this wasn’t all in one trip, mind you, but he managed to stow much more in that car than I thought it was capable of.
Wonderful pieces of machinery, they are.
And I wonder why FriendBill hasn’t found this thread yet…?
