Volleyball uniforms

Here in South Dakota volleyball is only a female sport. I think this is silly but due to culture that will not change for a long time.

But I digress, all the high school and college teams wear similar uniforms. The shirt is usually loose fitting in the school color and has the payer’s number on the back. Some of the shirts have short sleeves others have no sleeves.

I am wondering about the shorts. All the teams wear very tight shorts that go to about mid thigh. These seem to be much tighter than the compression shorts or tights worn by runners. These shorts really hug the body conforming to all the curves.

I understand why the shirts are loose fitting and have a number, no problem, we need to know who is who and the player needs to have freedom of movement. However, why are all these teams wearing these incredibly tight shorts? I can’t think of a reason why they need to be so tight, it seems like a lot of anatomy is not left to the imagination.

Does anybody have an idea? Are the coaches trying to get people in the stands by parading the team in lascivious outfits? Or, is there a performance reason for wearing them.

You think that is lascivious? The old uniforms were even briefer. Think bathing suit bottoms.
