My son has been vomiting lately but does not present any other symptoms. No fever, general nausea, etc. Sometimes it’s right after he’s eaten, other times he can eat and no problems. And a couple of times this has come in the middle of the night, about 2 am or so, give or take an hour. Then he just goes back to sleep, and the next morning is fine. This has been over the last four or five days, with a day or so in the middle where he didn’t have any problem. He does seem to have a reduced appetite during this time.
He has also in the past had brief bouts with vomiting that have seemed similar, maybe his stomach would get upset, he’d puke, then right back to cheery old self. Even a severe coughing attack seems to have the ability to bring on vomit.
Any ideas on what could be causing this? It’s very hard to search on, both here and in the Internet, since vomit is a symptom for a heck of a lot of stuff, but most don’t seem to apply.
Thanks, Ice Wolf, we’ll do that. Our family doctor is a bit low key, which generally I like, but sometimes makes me a bit nervous. And doctors are not infallible, so I’d like to do as much background research as possible. It’s makes me feel more comfortable and better understand whatever advice he gives.
How old is he?
If he’s very young (baby baby, not toddler) it might be some sort of gastric reflux or oesophageal problem he could grow out of.
Vomiting is controlled by a centre in the brain, as well as by irritation in the GIT, if it doesn’t look like food poisoning or something viral, take him to the doc.
Might be nothing, might be something.
If he’s alert, happy and hungry, probably nothing.
Maybe some anti-nausea meds would be nice? Save you some of the cleanup, if nothing else!
I’m not saying he shouldn’t be checked by a doctor, but let me say that some kids are just pukers. An aquaintence of mine has an 8 year old son who throws up at the drop of a hat, and then is fine. He’s been checked by doctors, and found to be healthy. He just throws up very easily. She told me that he throws up from being overexcited, carsick, fed. . . anything! She’s not concerned, however, because he’s growing and functioning normally in every other way.
It’s possible that your son has a similar problem.
I have had the same thing happen to me a few times within the last year. Twice this month I woke up in the middle of the night (2 or 3 in the am), threw up, and then fell back asleep. The next morning I had no ill effects, and in fact, barely remebered it. Im 22, male, in good shape, and in all the times it happened there were no similar foods I ate or activities I participated in that I could see as being the catalyst. The first 2 times I was just kind of weirded out by it, but now that it has happened about 7 or 8 times within the past year, Im kind of getting scared.
