Voting Americans in general are racist, homophobic, anti-semetic and anti-islamic.

Sure sure…but what about red headed left handed Anabaptist hermaphrodites with hunched backs and tattoos on their ankles??? Would American’s vote for them? And if not then American’s (in general) are certainly racing homophiles who are anti-Semantic and a strong aversion to Bob…

Serious question: Could a vegetarian be elected President? NOTE: Bobby Jindal is a vegetarian.

None of them would have been elected if they were Mexican, because the rules say you have to be a US citizen. If they were Americans of Mexican descent, maybe. But probably not.

People vote for people they can identify with. Or more accurately, they vote for candidates they think can identify with them as a voter. So we (anyone, not just Americans) tend to vote for people like ourselves, all things being equal. It’s not being racist or homophobic or anything else; it’s just being human and gravitating toward people who are most similar to yourself. Again, all things being equal. I agree that Obama’s margin of victory would have been larger if he were white, but I don’t think that makes the voters racist.

I have great difficulty imagining significant numbers of voters giving a shit (Why would they?). So, yes. Easily, if they were otherwise a compelling candidate. A total non-issue.

Also, not that I have any reason to doubt you, but simply because I’m curious about it: do you have a cite for Bobby Jindal’s vegetarianism?

The Democrats did have a Jewish* Presidential* candidate. Michael Dukakis is a Jew.

Maybe we’ve already had a gay President without our being aware of it. It wouldn’t be that unusual out of 44 men.

I believe that Governor Richardson from New Mexico has a Mexican heritage and he was a viable candidate. But it would take a change in the Constitution for an actual Mexican to be elected. You have to be born in America.

Someone suggested that the “Fundamentalist South” would not be open to an Islamic President. I wouldn’t be too sure of that. The Southern Baptist Convention is located within ten miles of the largest Iraqi population outside of Iraq.

Oops, on review I see Skammer beat me to one of my points.

What? According to Wikipedia, he was and is a Greek Orthodox Christian, and I see no mention of conversion or Jewish descent.

That makes sense in a case like George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, or Ronald Reagan. But I think people saw Eisenhower as an accomplished leader and hero who would carry us through alarmingly dangerous times. Many people didn’t like Richard Nixon personally, but thought he was shrewdly intelligent and would restore social order. George H.W. Bush and Barack Obama may have won more because of their opponent’s negatives than their own attributes.
I thinks its just people voting in their own perceived best interests, which change over time. Sometimes they want daddy in charge, sometimes they want their older brother or best friend to get the job, and sometimes they just don’t want that creep across the street to be in charge.

His wife’s Jewish, if that means anything.

question re-asked to Jump.

As a redheaded Anabaptist (severely lapsed) less than 6’ tall, I sort of doubt it.

Apparently the person who started the thread has jumped ship.

James Buchanan may have been homosexual.
