I don’t get it. Are you disputing something I said?

ETA: And that is a terribly freaking stupid way to enforce the traffic laws, even if it is common practise.

Yep, likewise. Except I wouldn’t go so far as to call your statement an argument.

This amuses me greatly.

Oh and PS, you’re flirting with disaster. Take your lumps, dear.

For the record: if you’re going to be oh-so-original in these threads and post a sig when you normally don’t have one, fucking make it funny. They’re all annoying, since this joke was played out approximately one nanosecond after sigs became an issue on the very first messageboard, when Og and Ug were discussing the virtues of different kinds of clubs for hitting cavewomen and dragging them back to their caves, but the funny ones are somewhat less so.

As I understand the rationale for the rule (contrasted against the irrationale for it that some folks are on about), it’s that sigs often contain cutesy little sayings–mine, for example, makes fun of people who are political whackaloons who insist that they’re moderates. That’s what sigs have been used for since the early nineties, in my old-man memory. They look like part of the post, but they’re not.

Actual signatures are different. I have never heard of a messageboard forbidding people from actually signing their posts. The rules here don’t forbid it–rather, a convoluted reading of the rules, conflating two definitions of a signature, results in that unnecessary restriction.

Again, even in this thread, I’m finding it difficult not to sign my posts: the habit is nearly twenty years old, and I maintain is a good habit, in keeping with social norms, and that the people protesting it really need to find something better to do. If this rule is in place, I am certain I will unwittingly violate it–and I see no need to prevent people from signing posts.

It’s a practical way of enforcing traffic laws. You look out for the big things (excess speeder, drunk drivers), and they take up enough of your time that you let the little things go (jaywalking, stopping in a no standing zone).
When your constituency starts raising a fuss over the little infractions, even if its a minority, the little things need to be enforced or removed as rules. And if they’re going to be removed as rules, you have a duty to refrain from them until that actually happens, and not play around with the infantile 5,6 bullshit.

I raise my hypocrisy flag high for all to see.

You really shouldn’t bring so much attention to your posting style. People might notice.

Well, I’ve gotta say, 5, 6 is a lot more interesting that whatever your sig used to be.

No it isn’t, not in this context. This board is not made to be a collection of emails, but to be pretty much a free flowing stream of conversation. In this context what you do is the equivalent of saying something annoying every time you have uttered something while having a conversation with your friends. It’s a lame attempt at grabbing attention, much like Tucker Carlson’s bowtie or those thirteen year olds that enter, I don’t know, “High School Musical Fans” message board for the first time and cluster their signatures with random quotes and animated gifs that sometimes take over half a page. It’s dumb.

Really? First of all, spell check flagged both somethign and peoiple, yet you chose to ignore it. Also, there is an edit function (which you ignored.)

Secondly, reread the OP. If you’re perusing a thread and it kind of turns into 2 posters going back and forth, the valete, or enjoy, or regards, gets on every last fucking nerve! Try it the next time you’re having a conversation with someone. End every sentence with “later,” or “cheers,” or "love, " or “sincerely.” That is some serious weird, at the very least.

If the OP didn’t convince you, then you won’t be bothered anyway, so…carry on.

Because you were ignoring a rule and annoying a lot of people in the process. And then you open this thread to tell everyboy how proud you are that you are breaking a rule thus calling everybody’s attention, including the mods, to the fact that you were breaking a rule.

Do you also honk your horn as you speed past police cars on the highway?

Me too.

Its supposed to be “kiss my ass”. What the hell is the world coming too when you spend twenty seconds googling “Latin swear words” and the internet gives you an inaccurate answer. I despair, I really do.

Because I told them to.

The thing is, when people complained about Shodans sign of, I do believe he started a thread asking what the general opinion was regarding “Regards, Shodan”, and then promised to consider what people were saying. Even if he continued to use the sig, at least he made an effort to understand its effect.
What raised my ire yesterday was that when the same concerns were pointed out to you, I got the impression that you intended to just laugh and carry right on doing it, other posters be damned. However, though that is what motivated me to write the OP, it must be stressed that I have no problem with you personally.

No, my hate is reserved for sig lines, which annoy the everlasting fuck out of me.

I just want to throw in another few points…

  • What if more people started using similar sigs? What if rather than three or four people using them, fifty or a hundred regular posters all signed off in the same fashion? The board would look like a cluttered mess thats what. How do I know? Just look at this very thread which is full of sig lines, It looks horrible, in fact, it looks like the kind of thread I paid my subscription to clean up by removing sigs. Except that you want to circumvent that don’t you.

  • I know people who sign off e-mails with their name, department and telephone number. Should even more information be added to these sigs then? If you can write a name, why not an address as well? If we allow people to write sigs outside of the sig box, where does it end? Why allow one line but not four? Will it be pictures or weblinks next?

  • One phrase I hear regarding discourse on the SDMB is that replies should be about the post, not the poster. But what about when the poster makes pains to make the post about him? How do you separate the poster when the last thing you read every single time is his name, rammed down your throat?

I hope you are going to do what I think you are doing - post some idiotic non sequitur as meaningless as your usual sig, and continue poking the bear until you get banned.

When you signed up you agreed to the rules. If you don’t like them campaign to change them but don’t just try to flaunt them. I have seen this so many times and I look forward to the breakdown point and to see whether you can drop your “crusade” or beat it’s dead body until your finished.

I don’t personally get the hate for sigs, but I do get the hate for people who do something everyone is telling them is annoying and they’d like them to stop and their reaction is just to laugh at them and do it anyway. Seems kind of, well, like jerk behaviour to me. Don’t we have a rule against that?

I’ve got an animated .gif with embedded MIDI. The first bars of the Exorcist soundtrack, I believe, set to repeat forever and ever and ever.

I say this because as we know, the whole point of a Doomsday Machine is lost if you keep it a secret.

In my opinion emails are a totally different thing altogether and it is good and appropriate to have plenty of information on the signature. Yes, even your email address should be there.

I work for a large corporation with offices all over the world. Not just branch or sales offices but R&D in sevral countries, accounting etc. Often the first notice I get of some matter is an email with a string of emails in it discussing the matter. In those headers the email has been stripped and only the name remains. Like

If people add their names, emails, phone numbers and locations to their signatures it is a great help for me in contacting them.

But that is not the case here.

Re: Sailor

Oh I agree completely. I was just referring to those who reason that because they sign off e-mails they also sign off posts on a message board.

They are not the same thing. Signatures work, and can be necessary on e-mails. They are never necessary on message boards because of that big blue thing at the TOP of the message.
