VPN problem with D-Link router

I have a DSL line from the local Telco and a D-Link DI-704 router to connect three computers at home. I set up a VPN connection to my office, but it is unusable. The speed when I use it slows down from between 200 and 900 kbps to that many bps, so roughly by a factor of 1000. A request for help from D-Link was ignored. The computer centre here hasn’t the foggiest idea what could be wrong. Does anyone on SDMB have any idea what is going on. I suspect that it has something to do with the firewall that the router implements. Their documentation is pathetic.

I don’t have a solution but since no one else has posted, I’ll throw this in:
Check out http://www.phoneboy.com . There is a huge amount of information regarding firewalling but also some stuff specific to dsl and vpn. You don’t mention if you’re using SecureRemote but if you are, check out the FireWall-1 FAQ: SecuRemote with DSL or Cable Modem Connections link.

As far as I could tell, this site was specific to something called fireWall-1. My firewall is the hardware firewall built in to the router.
