I’m going on information that I got from a conversation I had in a bar several months ago, so it’s certainly possible that the information I have to provide for my fellow Dopers to answer is not complete enough or, perhaps, pure gibberish.
I was in the (American) bar talking to one Irish woman when another Irish woman joined us. The first greeted the second with the phrase:
“How’s your <Funny Irish Word>?”
I was told that <Funny Irish Word> means “vagina”, and that the greeting is generally only used between two women who are having fun at being vulgar with each other.
First of all, what is the missing <Funny Irish Word>?
And did they give me an accurate explanation of the definition and the use of the phrase, or were they just having a bit of fun with a guy in a bar who they knew wouldn’t know any better?
(My fuzzy memory tells me the word was something like “Ghee” [sp?])
I’ve never personally heard this greeting, and I’d speculate that your second explanation is right: they were doing this for fun due to nobody understanding what “gee” means.
What fun we have in Indian restaurants… But pity the poor fella called Ulick Magee.
Thanks, jjimm!
At least I got the word right. I’m still gonna check back to this Thread to see if anyone posts having actually heardthe greeting. Maybe it is just a personal joke between these two friends that I met. (They’ve known each other since childhood, it’s quite possible they have many private “in-jokes” that mean nothing to other people.)
Heh, my friends band had a great song which contained the following line in the chorus: Tabhair dom gi Roughly translated it means Give me your …um, gi
They also do a version of Black Velvet Band that is hilarious, a sample line:
“…She wore no Knickers, no none at all! But around her shoulders was a Bleck Velvet Band”!
As to the greeting isn’t a normal one but one I could easily see being used by friends as a greeting that grew from a single incident in the past to a running thing.
Similarly my Uncle generally greets my mother with a “Howaya cuntface” as he knows it really annoys her (in a jokey way, she does mock shock every time). This goes back to her not enjoying a joke which contained the term cuntface in it.
We are quite a vulgar lot in general. Swearing is way more socially acceptable here, not in work but outside people swear a lot in general.
