Well, think for a second about the inherent problems with plotting a comic book for 50+ years. Either your hero ages with the world around him, in which case Cap is now in his 90s, or he doesn’t, in which case you have this eternally youthful guy in 2012 who looks no older than he did in WWII. Or you don’t advance the setting of the book and just keep telling stories from the 1950s. All of those have some serious problems.

It is worse than that. Story lines that play out over several days or a week in story time go through all four seasons every twelve issues! It is something we have always accepted.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing characters age and die. But Spider Man is to profitable a franchise to put Peter in a walker…

God forbid there be any fresh ideas. I guess that is why I don’t read comics much any more. In the late 60’s and early 70’s it all seemed so fresh and innovative because it was.
