Wait Wait Don't Tell Me's greatest moment ever

I simply can’t find the moment I mentioned upthread, so I’ll have to give this a try, but you’ll have to help. I can’t describe the sound effect, but can sort of tell you how to generate it:

  1. with your mouth hanging open and relaxed, shake your head violently from side to side, maximizing the way your cheeks flap around. Picture a bloodhound shaking his head dry, or someone doing a comic impression of Richard Nixon.
  2. as you’re doing this, and without articulation (remember, your mouth is completely slack), loudly vocalize: “HWBBLLHWLBBLBL!!” It should sound kind of wet and jowly.
    (pause)
  3. This sound will be represented in the story that follows as “hwabbel.”

So, I think the game was “fill in the blank”; Peter Sagal was telling about a hijacking (in South America?) where the stolen vehicle was a truck full of silicone breast implants.
One of the male panelists interrupted Peter to ask…
*
What I want to know is, why would they steal a truckload of breast implants? Did they plan to sell them? Or did they just want to dive in and go “hwabbel”??*

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a bigger laugh from the audience, but I can see this just isn’t going to work in print. At least I tried. That oughtta count for something. Thank you for your cooperation.

Yeah, what is it about that guy? He’s a wise fool. He’s like the anti-Karl Pilkington.

I can hear it perfectly in my mind’s ear and it’s totally cracking me up!

Then my work here is finished.
Seriously, thank you. It matters to me more than I thought it would.

I learned how to make that sound effect in college – too many beers one night, I suppose. It’s a cheap way to get a laugh out of my young nephew and nieces, but it gives me a splitting headache after about 20 seconds. Having just read that story, now I can’t stop making the noise.

Brilliant! Thank you! :cool::smiley:

Oh, you’re welcome! Honestly, every time I even think about your description, I get a terrible case of the giggles.

And I am SO making use of the word “hwabbel” at every appropriate opportunity!

I don’t know if this is the exact podcast, but here is a video of Penn telling the story.

Y’know, after hearing Simon’s standup, I’m reevaluating. He seems to be funnier with another culture for pushback. Back home, he’s just another fey wry observationalist (altho he is way more aware of his world than Karl, as are most vertebrates).
