Yes, I saw that and chuckled. I loved watching him ask how she was granted such unprecedented access, and if he even realized she was there. Yes, I giggled, and yes I am immature.
Technically, military generals never really retire. They are just taken off active duty but are still beholden to the regulations of the UCMJ. The affair occurred during his time on active duty, so technically he could still be in violation. This is all according to my source who is an Army officer.
And carrying on an affair in secret is a violation of his security clearance requirements. Just because it came to light doesn’t make it not a violation, and he could lose his security clearance for anything that would make him susceptible to blackmail. Not to mention an extremely poor idea for the director of the CIA.
From what I understand, the FBI was originally involved when Jill Kelley reported harassing emails to a friend of hers at the FBI. They began tracing the emails to a general location near where Broadwell lives, and identified her. They also discovered emails of a sexual nature between her and Petraeus, which they didn’t believe was possible, and investigated further believing that his email security had been compromised. Once they discovered that his email had not been compromised, and he was indeed sending her explicit emails, they passed the discovery on to their supervisors.
I think it’s absolutely appropriate that he resigns. He made a series of extremely poor judgments with his dick. He’s the leader of the most powerful intelligence agency in the world, and needs to exercise good judgment in his personal and professional life as well. Not to mention, Broadwell is being investigated because she divulged classified information about Benghazi during an open forum that is suspected to have come from Petraeus. The idea that he should have stayed in his position is ridiculous, I’m betting this is only the tip of the glacier.
No. It’s folks who know that some of our greatest generals were major horndogs - Moshe Dayan alone was responsible for banging an estimated 25% of the female population of Israel - and that if they had been cashiered for adultery, we probably wouldn’t be alive today.
The story get more sordid by the day.
So now athird investigation - spawned by the second investigation which began as a result of the first investigation, is underway against General John Allen, the commander of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan. Apparently they also found inappropriate emails between him and Jill Kelley, the lady who made the original FBI complaint that started the whole thing.
These Generals may be horndogs but what in the hell are these two looney horndogettes thinking?
Good lord. So right around the time his mistress was being dumped, she started sending threatening anonymous e-mails to his friend, who he by no account was having an affair with, but was having an affair with another general. Jealous lovers, threats, affairs abound. Shit’s getting all Melrose Place.
I bet nobody in this case will be able to mention the phrase* dishonorable discharge* at the hearings without giggling.
And over here they’re talking about how the FBI agent who launched the investigation originally was barred from the case because… he has sent Jill Kelley a shirtless photo of himself in some unrelated circumstance! WTF are they putting in these people’s food?
It’s getting hard to keep track of who’s who anymore, but I have a sick feeling that before it’s all over we’re going to see photos of Leon Panetta in drag.
Supposedly, that is not true.
Officers are cashiered, and all military personnel involved are officers.
In other news, Broadwell’s poor cuckolded husband discovered his wife’s infidelity on national news, while he was with her at a rather expensive mountain getaway which he had paid for, for her 40th birthday bash. They left early…in a bad mood. The lady seems more and more classy with each passing day.
Incidentally, Mrs Boradwell is a reservist IIRC, so could SHE be technically held under the appropriate military statute against adultery?
It’s not as funny if I have to explain it.
All the articles I have read on Business Insider state that the affair “ended once he began his position at the CIA”. I keep looking for an article that says they started the affair after he left the Army, but this article just keeps linking itself. I know they were embedded together in AFG for a period of time, and this article describes their first “interview” in 2008, when Petraeus didn’t leave the Army until 2011. So basically I have seen conflicting reports that it ended as soon as he went to the CIA and reports that it didn’t start until he left for the CIA. I’m sure more information will be forthcoming in the next few days.
So far, it’s not clear (to me) why Broadwell, the mistress, was harassing Jill Kelly, the friend. Did I miss something? I realize that the story is still developing.
She was harassing her via a throwaway email account because she thought Kelley was too close to Petraeus. I think the quote “Stay away from my man” may have been used somewhere. Now, it’s being reported that Kelley had exchanged between 20,000 - 30,000 emailswith General John Allen.
Also, this is just too hilarious:
In Her First Anonymous Email, Paula Broadwell Told Jill Kelley To Stop Socializing With Other Generals
After Kelley reported the anonymous emails to the FBI, citing concerns about harassment, the subsequent investigation found out that it was Broadwell sending the emails. Now, the FBI is investigating 20,000 to 30,000 “potentially inappropriate” pages of emails between Allen and Kelley.
(from OP’s link)
20,000 to 30,000 pages of emails? How the heck was Allen finding time to do anything else?
I was thinking more of Jerry Springer. ![]()
I suspect that the amount the population of a country cares about the sexual morality of its military leaders is in inverse proportion to the amount that a country relies on having the best military leaders for its survival. ![]()
Those service academy ring-knockers, so unlike us lowly enlisted bullet-sponges, for whom “be my little general” was no more than a mnemonic device.
No no, don’t forget, the person she reported it to was a friend of hers who worked at the FBI, who didn’t work in cyber crimes. This guy had been sending her shirtless pictures of him. And after he sent the report to the right people, he continued to try to be involved to the point where the FBI had to tell him to stop nosing around an investigation he wasn’t a part of.
This FBI agent who thought the investigation had stalled, then called up either Eric Cantor directly or someone who then took the information to Eric Cantor, because “due to his worldview he thought the investigation was being swept under the rug to protect President Obama”.
What progress. 15 years ago, the president himself had to receive the blowjob in order for the GOP to weaponize it against him. Now things are moving outward. In the future, every blowjob will somehow reveal the mendacity of any Democratic president. Gridlock in the policitcal context will henceforth be known as Gridlockjaw.
