“The First Cut is the Deepest” may be the best singing I’ve ever heard on a record. And when I saw him sing it live at MSG as part of an accoustic set in the early 90s–just amazing. “People Get Ready” was awesome too.
This thread cannot die without someone mentioning “Every Picture Tells a Story”.
“I got arrested for inciting a peaceful riot
when all I wanted was a cup of tea.”

As some fool did in post #12 … ?
Post #12 is referring to the album; I am referring to the song.

Just in case you were being serious–or you’re not but someone thinks you are–John Peel does not play mandolin on “Maggie May.” He only mimed the mandolin part with Stewart on TV. The actual mandolinist, credited on the album as “the mandolin player in Lindisfarne,” was Ray Jackson.
As a Lindesfarne fan I thought it sounded like Jackson. And on the rest of the album, what made it was guitars by Ronnie, not vocals by Rod. Stewart was there to not screw it up, which he didn’t, like he didn’t for Beck*.

- There is only one artist who deserves to be known as “Beck,” and he doesn’t have two turntables and a microphone.
Goddammit I had JUST gotten to sleep. Do you know how much these hot flashes interfere with my sleep schedule?
This better be good.
It’s late July and I should really get on back to school…
And to be fair, he couldn’t have tried any more.
I mean, he could’ve, but Britt Ecklund’s suit indicated he wasn’t willing to. Which for most people would be the same thing.
I like some of Rod (could do w/o Hot Legs for sure).
I really love his acoustic version of (have forgotten the song title, sorry) “If I listened long enough to you…I’d find a way to believe that it’s all true…”
I have to say my favorite Rod Stewart song is Italian Girls from Never a Dull Moment. I still can never decide which album is better, this or Every Picture Tells a Story. Both are close to perfect.
Brilliantly fantastic song. Breathtakingly stupid haircut.
I’ve always thought that EPTAS was a great album, although the recording itself felt sub par, to me at least.
I knew he was on the TOTP performance but I couldn’t be arsed verifying if he actually played on the record.
… or maybe it was just the pressing that was depressing:D
Ronnie Wood is wasted in the Stones.
ETA: Though being wasted probably helps him fit in.
‘Reason to Believe’- one of my favorite Rod Stewart songs.
I’ve always thought that “Stay With Me” was a sublime garage-band song. The studio recording seems outwardly sloppy, but the precision of the musicianiship is remarkable. It simply sounds great.
I’ve always harbored the notion that the reason the Stones hired Wood was because “Stay With Me” is a song they wish they had recorded. And, I really don’t mind disagreement, it’s just a thought I like.
