Amazon is the new king of the hill. No surprise, I guess. This article is from last month but I just noticed it. In the 72 years of tracking only four companies have made the number one spot.
That’s crazy to me. That should poke a hole in any suggestion that a mega-rich corporation dominating its competitors in the retail space is in any way a recent phenomenon. That has actually been the case for most current people’s lifetime.
So what are the other two #1’s in the last 72 years?
General Motors, ExxonMobil, Walmart, and Amazon

What criteria are they using? I thought some of the big tech companies have been worth more than Walmart for several years.
From the article, “On Wednesday, Fortune released its annual Fortune 500 rankings, listing the largest corporations in the United States by revenue.” Describing Walmart as no longer the “richest” company isn’t quite right.
That checks out. Those are mega corporations for sure.
Revenues - intake - are very different from riches. If you look at the list of companies with highest net income, the list is exactly who you expect and Walmart is nowhere near it.
In 2025, the number one was Alphabet, Google’s parent, with $124 billion. Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Berkshire Hathaway - Warren Buffett, Amazon at $76 billion, Saudi Aramco, Meta, JP MorganChase, and TSMC - the big Taiwanese chipmaker - at $50 billion.
Walmart was at $20 billion. [insert world’s tiniest violin]
