Dad is convinced the Walmart Superstore near him makes guacamole second only to his own. Mi hermanita Betita dice que es la verdad. Y ella es Mexicana. Pop says the crew that makes the guacamole is all Mexican, and you know when they are going to make guacamole because they’ll have a lot of avocados out getting over-ripe then the next day the fresh guacamole is out. I’m just reporting what he tells me.
Their Sam’s Choice pizzas (usually near the deli area) are the best store bought pizza I’ve ever had. They’re not going to compare with a good pizzeria pizza but they blow away Tombstone, Red Baron, or DiGiorno.
I got one of these the other day and I’d like to second this. Great quality ingredients on the supreme- I was surprised.
That’s because you don’t have a Publix. Their premium frozen pizzas are AWESOME.
Agreed. I like their candles just as well as the expensive Bath and Body Works ones (and substantially more than the ones they have at Target) Just stocked up on a few Pumpkin Spice ones to hold me until next year, since I’m guessing it’s seasonal.
They have strong scents when burned, too. I like the layer ones and the big jar ones.
I also buy jeans at Wal-Mart. No other clothes, really, because most of them are dreadful, but I’m just thrilled to find jeans that fit me other than at Lane Bryant. I’ve never found another place that has big girl jeans that fit me properly. $60 jeans no more! Sure, they fall apart easier, but after ruining my Nth expensive Lane Bryant pair by leaving an ink pen in the pocket, I don’t really care. They hardly ever get to reach their natural life span in my hands.
I have found the Great Value Wally World stuff isn’t as good or cheap as Save-A-Lot or Aldi stuff, but it’s usually hard to find a better deal on tires with the road hazard warranty than Walmart.
I bought some George brand shoes, of all things. Leather, semi-casual, they look quite stylish, and they are the 2nd most comfortable pair of shoes that I’ve had in my life. The first were, of course, Doc Martens. I bought them (the Georges) about 4 years ago, and wore them for the first time last week!
Their sugar cookies are phenomenal. Those are the ones in the bakery section that are about 3 inches wide, 1/3 inch thick, and cost $2.75 for 10, in the plastic see through boxes. I love them! Passionately!
Best wishes,
hh
Their in-house baked goods are wonderful. I picked up some jelly roll thingies and they were very soft, sweet, and delicious. I like their store-made French Bread. I also like their selection of exotic produce, as the avocados at Dominick’s are usually old and practically rancid by comparison. As mentioned, their frozen dinner prices can’t be beaten.
I had a Walmart futon last through 3 years of heavy daily use in college. Not the cheapie $99 futon but the “deluxe” $199 futon with wooden arms. Definitely got my money’s worth there.
I second Broomstick on the glasses. When my vision plan changed to include them last year, I was ecstatic. WalMart has always been the best place to be fitted for this hard-to-fit wearer.
Tires. I can buy a set of Bridgestones usually about $50-100 cheaper than elsewhere.
WoW trading cards. I buy these occasionally as a small gift for my great-nephew. It’s the only place in my town that sells them, but they always have about the same variety as the card and comic shops in the city and quite a bit cheaper.
The rest I can usually buy cheaper or better quality elsewhere.
This is what I came to say. I like the mild kind in the little square tub. It almost tastes like nothing but flavorful creamy mashed avocado to me, which I love, and my Mig adds chilies to his serving to make it spicy and cilantro to watch me squirm.
I seldom ever go into Walmart in the USA. In my area at least, they’re run down, filthy, dirty, stores that attract people that I think might mug me. Still… when I was looking for a Wii last year, they were the only store that I could identify online that had one, so I was pleasantly surprised about that.
In Mexico I rather like Walmart for certain grocery items. Here, Walmart is a higher class of store, because it’s expensive for the lowest class, and they have cheaper options (whereas in the Michigan, the lowest class is still rich, and have no cheaper options).
So, what pleasantly surprises me about Mexican Walmarts is their full-service butchers. They never have a problem with accommodating my special requests: inch thick ribeye, inch thick pork chops (the default pork chop is paper thin!), giving me real slabs of ribs (and trimmed!). The default is to sell separate, loose ribs or short slabs Korean (cross-cut) style.
We have the largest Walmart in the country here in Albany. I kid you not. But they do have creamer for like 70 cents cheaper by the bottle.
We haven’t done the store cheer in years; along with the Saturday meetings that execs used to have to do, it’s been phased out as a daily activity. A lot of the “hokey” stuff that Sam had instituted has been quietly killed off since he died; I’m thankful that I don’t have to do the cheer, but at the same time, I do think the chain has lost a lot of its personality because of this.
Anyway.
Seconding the Equate OTC meds. I’ve also noticed that WM even sells the name brand stuff cheaper than Walgreens or CVS sells their generics; I can buy Equate Nite Time 10 oz for about $3 or NyQuil for $6… or go to Walgreens and buy Walgreens Nite Time for $6 or Nyquil for $10.
One of the nearby WM supercenters has begun to again carry my favorite frozen pizza, California Pizza Kitchen rising/original crust 5-cheese and tomato. Every other local chain stopped carrying it a while back.
Most frozen foods are cheaper than the grocery chains, unless one is running an insane loyalty card discount.
They carry generics to Little Debbie now, as if Little Debbie wasn’t generic enough. And they’re not bad, if you like Nutty Bars or Swiss Cake Rolls.
I avoid Wally World because they’re too far out of the way and have assaulted my sense of decency too much but last night I was forced to, after going even further than WalMart(physically, not psychically) to Target. Target had a bunch of cheap cameras on display but seemed to be out of them all *, so I had to go to WalMart and hope that they were not in the same situation. The clerk thought they were, but whaddya know, they did have a digital camera that took AA batteries for less than $120 (and cheaper than Target, too)
So WalMart got points yesterday for not having display of stock they didn’t have, and actually having stock. I am still going to K-Mart in the future**, though, even though they are the worst chain in terms of customer service, just because K-Mart is literally a block away from me.
*Directed at the keeping-stuff-on-display-you-don’t-have part, not the running-out-of-stock-at-christmastime part.
** Except for big-name stuff like cameras, in which I won’t even try because they know much less about their stock than any other big box store, a lack of knowledge only matched by their consistently surly attitude but they’re a block from my house!
Never have had an issue with any of the Equate brands – OTC meds, HBA (that’s health and beauty aides if you’re not in the supermarket biz), you name it. Mostly everything in our medicine chest is Equate.
Our local Wally World recently had a remodel where they enlarged the center store for a grocery/frozen area, so naturally I had to check it out. Their gallon 2% milk is even cheaper than 7-11’s. Huge international grocery aisle – there’s stuff there I’ve never seen in any other international aisle in any other supermarket in the area. They’re never going to take business away from the huge Asian market nearby, but they’ve nearly everything else, it seems.
Price-wise they’re a lot cheaper in some items (canned goods, frozen food) but also a bit more expensive in others, particularly with name brand goods. I’ve started buying some items there, but not everything. So far I’ve been very happy with any Great Value item I’ve bought.
Oh, and Lee jeans. They’re the only brand that fits me well and charges the most reasonable price. Why should I go to KMart and get the same exact pair for $5-7 more?
Before my oldest son came along, so more than 11 years ago, I bought two pairs of spandex (lycra? something like that) workout cropped pants at WalMart. It’s unlikely I paid more than $15 a pair, and it was probably more like $10
Now I’m not saying I worked out super duper regularly for all of those 11 years, but I tried and I have been very regular the past 5 years or so, wearing only those two pairs of pants, washing after each use, and they are both completely intact, showing no inclination to go to pieces. I don’t know what brand they are because the tags have faded.
The Equate and Great Value items are all terrific and inexpensive, but those who prefer brand names will find that at Wal-Mart they can often find a brand name product at a price as good or better than their grocery stores’ house brand.
I like Wal-Mart, but I’ve found, through comparison shopping, that the food deals, at least here, are sometimes more expensive than Kroger’s (the other supermarket neaby). It depends on what it is, and possibly on the week, too. But sometimes milk and eggs are cheaper at Wal-Mart, sometimes Kroger’s is cheaper.
On dry goods, though, Wal-Mart wins hands down. I get bran flakes for cereal… basically what would be Total, but the Great Value version. Read the nutritional value… they’re the same. Ditto with the brown rice (compared to Mahatma’s), and the wheat dry pasta (compared to any other name brand they have around). They tend to be more expensive on bread, though, compared to Kroger’s. And the brand-name frozen dinners depend… And at least here, the produce doesn’t have as much variety as Kroger’s, but what they do have, they have in more quantity.
The Great Value fudge brownies (sold in the generic Little Debbie section) are quite good, and $1 for 6 brownies!
My wife swears by Wal-Mart’s “Mutts” (from the comic strip) sleepwear. I think those are about $8 apiece.
I’ll second the poster above who lauded Faded Glory jeans.
