WALMART Stuff That Pleasantly Surprised You

I have “Mutts” sleepwear, too! Just too adorable to pass up (since Mutts is my favorite comic strip, duh!) - I saw it for sale once on the Mutts website, but lo and behold, there were cute t-shirts and pj bottoms right there, several patterns and sizes for the picking!

Walmart sells odd things in the food section I’ve never seen anywhere, like Mexican blocks of cinnamon-chocolate that you dissolve in hot water or milk to make a drink. Little “sushi sets”, seaweed wraps in a cellophane packet with recipes and suggestions for a make-your-own-sushi party. Oh, lotsa stuff! And the George clothing line is pretty decent. I got wonderful comfy stretch jeans that lasted forever.

And in their pet section - BIG cheap cans of tropical fish food, and shrimp pellets. Hard to find anywhere outside of an overpriced pet store.

“Faded Glory”? That sounds like a product made for movie stars who’ve gotten old, and were once hot but now have all of their curves moved from the right spots to the wrong spots.

It’s kind of true for the brand name, too. They’ve been around since 1972, but only under Walmart’s wing since 1995.

I’m often surprised at how much more expensive some items are at Walmart. You can’t take it for granted that most things are a bargain. But their regular price on chicken breast is $1.78/lb. Mostly, though, it’s not a place you go to get bargains on meat. On the other hand, for $10 you can get a chicken wing meal with a pound each of wings and two sides, and all these better than you can get at places that specialize in wings. Their crullers are actual crullers, and not just crinkly cake doughnuts.

I got a Faded Glory puffer coat at Walmart online for $10, shipped. I originally bought it to wear to the dog park (keep in mind dirty dogs jumping up on me, mud, fur, etc.) but I like it so much and it is so warm I wear it most of the time. I’ve definitely gotten my $10 worth from it.

Lots of groceries, cat food and litter, health & beauty aids. Ditto to the above posters on glasses–I’ve bought two pairs of no-line bifocals from their eyewear center and had great service, a nice selection of fashionable frames and no problems.

My best WalMart treasure is a nightgown. I’d been scouring the department stores for just the right piece of sleepwear, and discovered it at Wally. You know that scene in **National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation **when Clark sees THE Christmas Tree lighted from heaven above and accompanied by an angel chorus? That was how I felt when I saw that nightgown. Happy ending–I have worn it for 3 years (well, not 23/7 obviously), washed it weekly (maybe 100 times) and it has held up with no signs of pilling or disintegration. Wish I’d bought a dozen.

Their trail mix is excellent and reasonable.

Nothing wrong with the Equate and Great Value brands. A lot of the George tops fit me well, they’re cheap as hell, and stand up fine.

Also the local one always has a huge bin of really big stuffed animals for $9. Every now and then I buy another for my daughter. They’re plush, fuzzy, and she loves her collection of big “stuffys.”

One day when we were visiting my father, my 6 year old son and I were strolling through Walmart and my son grabbed a basketball and started dribbling. I told him to put it back, then saw the price was under $4.00. I bought it, we had it for a day or so, then left it with my dad who passed it on to some other visiting grandchild.

My mother swears by their eyeglass center, even now that she’s moved on to tri-focals. Inexpensive, the prescriptions are right, and they adjust her glasses for her whenever she needs them.

Personally, I’d guess that their Equate brand Excedrin has saved me a mint through the years. And I’ve never had a problem with any of their other store-brand OTCs - from infant acetominophen (sp?) to antacids to baby rash cream. And their Equate brand oatmeal products (like Aveeno - lotions and so forth) are awesome at half the price of Aveeno.

No problems ever with their store brand foods, and I love their bakery’s oatmeal raisin cookies.

Honestly, I’d shop there frequently if all of the idiot shoppers would clear out while I’m there.

(But I don’t use their car care center: too many people I know have had drain caps left out after oil changes, air filters smashed during oil changes, and my dad got dry-rotted tires there when he once bought a set of name-brand tires at our local WM.)

Great Value flaky butter biscuits. Just as good as Pillsbury’s for half the price.
