Waltz With Bashir

Wow I have not really been excited about the glut of flash animated movies in recent years, often they feel lifeless and lazy almost. But this movie rises above all that and is the first one I was wowed by.

Its about a Israeli vet who when discussing some disturbing dreams his friend has been having realizes he doesn’t remember the 1982 Lebanese War he fought in. He then travels around the world interviewing old squad mates and friends to try and recover his memories.

The war flashbacks are the highlight, they are gripping and tense. Combat is depicted pretty realistically, its neither condemned nor glorified.

The discussions in the present really bring the film down and do nothing to illustrate the amazing animation it is capable of.

This is definitely worth watching on cable or renting for a buck if you like realistic war movies.

I love this movie. The style is a little off-putting at the start but once you get into it, it really takes off. It’s particularly interesting in that the entire story is more or less true, from the conversation at the beginning to the dream he had up through his realizations about the war. The ending really hits you hard, as well.

Thanks, that sounds interesting. Looking on Metacritic, I see it got very good reviews.
