Want a house boat? Here's your chance

I’m on the mailing list for Treasury department auctions and they have everything from planes to real estate at one time or another. I think this is the first luxury house boat I’ve seen. It’s quite nice. What do you think it will go for?

I have no idea how much it will go for but I would guess not that much. It is basically a floating mobile home with extreme maintenance costs and headaches. People have a hard enough time selling real houses these days. I say $20K but like I said, I have no idea.

A friend of mine bought a 100 foot paddleboat for 20 K. It is a water cottage. A local yacht club wants to buy it for 200 k. They don’t have a clubhouse and it costs them some tax status not to have one. This boat can have a party of 80 on one of the floors. There are 2 floors and an upper deck. It has a huge galley .

I’m holding out for the double-wide model.

When you say 'paddle boat" I think of the kind that had peddles - obviously this is something different. So is it like the type of paddle boats that they have on the Mississippi? That would be an interesting boat to have.

Sweet! All you’ll need to add is a copy of Stevie Nicks’ “Back in the High Life Again” and one of those inflatable dancing things at the used car lot.

So how do they get the jetskis onto the houseboat? A floating dock? A small crane? Bounce them off the waves at speed and land on the top deck?

Well, I hope it comes with the paper manuals as well! When the power is off is the last time you need to dosciver that the manual for the electrical system needs electricity to be readable…

This is the kind of thing only a technical writer could say! Grasshopper, I think you have finally snatched the pebble from my hand.

I have no idea what this boat will go for. But I must say, I like the fact that in spite of the hull being dented, none of the dents leak. That’s good, because while relaxing in the whirlpool tub with a drink from the wet bar after a hard day of jet-skiing, watching three TVs, and deciding what to put on the grill for dinner, I’d be too tired to man a bilge pump.

From the last photo it looks like they’re on some kind of retractable ramp.

Its a little tilt ramp with a winch at the top… some are hand-crank, some are electric. Some houseboats have a little crane on the back. The also make special tow systems for pulling a runabout or ski boat behind.

This looks like a really nice houseboat. Houseboats are really fun. I understand making fun about it looking like mobile home, but they are definitely nicer. Imagine taking 11 of you closest friends and heading out to a nice cove for a party… you have a whole kitchen on board with bar, swimming, and jet skis (PWC/wave runner/whatever). They’re great. Just be careful to save the drinking for when you’re done swimming and jet skiing.

It’s been a while since I’ve looked but these things, and they are priced all over the board depending on size, condition, furnishings, and location… It costs quite a bit to move to another lake… on Dale Hollow Lake or Lake Cumberland in Kentucky one like this would sell for $100-200k (at least they did 10 yrs ago), don’t know what one would sell for at auctioun nowadays.

That is the oddest looking houseboat I’ve ever seen.
Is that typical for houseboats in Tennessee?

Anyway to find out how much money I am saving by not buying that thing? I would love to know.

It may have been used for the ATF or Coast Guard.

To be clear, I"m used to houseboats that look like this

Wow. How do they handle on the water?

Terrible. Just try water skiing behind one sometime.

No. It is a paddle boat. The paddles are like 16 feet in diameter.

Wasn’t that Stevie Wonder? No, Windwood! Steve Windwood.

I was just checking out the rest of that auction site.

At the December Miami auction some of the things up for bid are:
A pair of red flip flops, mens size 12
one pair mens red Nike shorts, size large
a Norelco hair trimmer, in it’s original packaging.
A pair of black mens Nike flip flops, size 9
A 6pack of Footlocker white socks

Really? The US Treasury is auctioning off flip flops and hair trimmers?

The way things are going, I wouldn’t be surprised to Treasury take up pimpin’.
