For a man who pretends to be pro-military he has very little respect for our military leadership and for the soldiers, sailors, and airmen in the field who in his twisted mind simply cannot handle serving side-by-side with THE GAYS!!!
Nevermind that the Military leadership has no problem with it. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain who declared through a comprehensive and unprecedented survey of military personnel saying they would have no problem serving openly with THE GAYS!!! It doesn’t matter to homophobic rat-bastard John McCain who is on the wrong side of history already and will find himself in the small cadre of political bigots who such as Strom Thrumond.
And lets not forget one other point…it is simply the right thing to do, period. It is disgusting beyond words that someone who wants to serve and defend this country either cannot do so or must compromise their lives a million ways to do it. And to what end? So Abe Simpson can cover his hate of THE GAYS!!! in some sort creepy patriotism that exists only in his head.
So fuck off you adultering, plane destroying bigoted asshole. Burn in hell.
I was amused by his comments that the new report doesn’t take into consideration the views of the troops. It’s been my experience in the military that the average soldier/sailor/airman/marine has a fairly - shall we say - biased view on homosexuals and not a whole lot of actual experience interacting with them. In other words, the vast majority has an uninformed opinion on almost any subject that doesn’t have to do with their jobs. For McCain to say that just shows that he’s a pandering liar of the first order, trying to keep his Arizona whackos voting for him.
I’m sure the “troops” were also not consulted about integrating the military way back in the day, nor would they have been able to get past their bias if they had been consulted. Since when do the generals, the congress and the President ask permission from the privates to change policy?
I don’t know if I’d even attribute it to homophobia. He has recently been catching flak for not being conservative enough, so this is an easy way for him to score points on that front. It has also been suggested that his “Maverick” reputation is actually just a spin on the fact that he tends to be petulantly obstructionist to anybody who beats him in a presidential elections – it just happens that his entire party is currently being petulantly obstructionist to the president that makes him seem less of a maverick now.
I seem to recall that he’s move the goalposts on this issue already. Previously, he said that if the generals were in favor of repeal, he would be, too. Well, the generals came out in favor. So, he said that if the troops were in favor, that would be different. Well, it turns out the troops are in favor. So now he says the study is flawed – the foolproof dodge for anybody determined not to acknowledge facts.
I was going to suggest they might have emailed him directly with their views but, given her own views, Cindy would probably refuse to read them to him.
What are the odds he wants to hear from “other uniformed officials, including senior enlisted personnel and combatant commanders…” that would be fine with repealing DADT?
This. I doubt that he personally gives a shit or is otherwise losing any sleep at night worrying about servicemembers being forced to share a foxhole with teh gays. It’s just another cynical attempt to pander to the teabagger base that nearly voted him out of office in the primary.
I was thinking the same thing, and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates made the same point when he appeared before the Senate Armed Services Committee. According to the New York Times, he said:
Turns out there WAS such a survey. As you guessed, about 80% against racial integration. McCain is effectively arguing that military should still be segregated out of one side of his mouth, (the one with the big lump of shit in it) while quoting Colin Powell out of the other side.
Kind of like how he was absolutely, no exceptions against his country engaging in torture, until he was told that it might help his election prospects.
Truly a sad, pathetic shell of a man I once admired.
Dude, he’s been all over the place running his mouth about how we can’t just let the homosexuals serve openly because they and the libruls want it. We have to conduct a study, and ask the guys on the ground what they want, and blah blah blah.
I’ve seen clips of him saying a few years ago that he’ll support this (letting gays serve openly) when the military leadership supports it. So a while back Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen said they were in favor of it. At that point, his story changed to, “Well, we need to hear from the troops on this.” And now that the troops were surveyed and are in favor of it (or at least aren’t opposed), he’s still in opposition.
Reading some news articles about the report, I see a new strategy arising. On the one hand, they have this report:
On the other hand, there is the prospect of the courts finding DADT unconstitutional:
It’s entirely possible that this carrot-and-stick strategy, plus a little arm-twisting and /or horse-trading behind the scenes, could reduce support for a filibuster to the point where a repeal will make it through.
You know what would have taken you just as much time as that post?
Putting john mccain dadt into Google and hitting the Search button. Then click on the News link and it would be the first hit, with the meager total of 3,112 news articles on the subject.
Seriously, i understand a post like this if someone brings up an obscure or hard-to-search topic, but ferchrissakes we’re talking about one of the most prominent legislators in the United states, and a topic that is front and center in the news. Would it kill you to do a news search?
Whatever else John McCain has done, he certainly does not deserve contempt for what he went through in Vietnam. The “War Hero” in the title is unjustified.
