Warning Dispute

There was a thread here about a plane crash in Canada from a flyover that was supposed to lift peoples’ spirits, instead it resulted in a life lost.

My comment was moderated for being a jerk apparently,

Now I’m not sure who I’m supposedly being a jerk to, the thread appears to be more a current events deal than someone on this board personally knowing the victim, I didn’t mean the comment as being cruel as much as I meant hey look at the irony and subverted expectations of this.

I’ve been on this board a while and I’ve seen and read all kinds of jokes about deaths that were in the news, people dying from taking fish medication, kids getting their heads cut off on watersides and no warnings.

This was worth a Mod Note at worst, but Inwouldnt even agree with that.

That was some rude moderation, you get called a jerk for that minor quip? That’s some Capricious and triggered moderating incoming from way out in left field. Got it.

I think it came off as cruel.

I get the attempt at irony, but this was a real “read the room” situation. The OP was very somber and so were the posts following it.

Also jokes in breaking news threads, especially tragic news, have always been modded. This is nothing new.

And do you think that this tragic irony is not blindingly obvious, and required someone to point it out? And to do so sarcastically?

The warning was deserved, and all you’re going to achieve here is to publicize more widely your jerkishness in that thread. We all have our moments of poor judgment, take your lump and move on.

E_C_G can speak for himself. I saw the report and went to the thread ready to give a warning as well but it was already done. You may have had other motivations in your head but the written word did not convey that. It just came of jerkish and cruel.

He didn’t “get called” a jerk. For as long as this board has been in existence rule #1 is “Don’t be a jerk.” That’s why the word is used at times to explain what rule was broken. The rules are on the top of this page if you haven’t checked them out yet.

I can see how it might have read as a threadshit. You come in to a thread discussing some breaking news about someone dying and make a joke out of it. That would be consistent with moderation regarding RIP threads for celebrities and someone popping in to say “good riddance” or “who cares?”

However, it seems to me more intended as a comment on the irony of the situation, whereby flyovers intended to boost morale ending tragically have a disproportionate counter result.

Without some further contributing factor, I’d say reverse the warning, no harm intended.

Along the lines of Poe’s Law, I can’t tell whether this is intended as sarcasm or not.

100% in agreement. “Pointless threadshit” is the most charitable possible interpretation of the disputed post. It came across to me as shockingly cruel and thoughtless. Warning fully deserved.

As soon as I saw your post I predicted a warning was imminent. What a shitty thing to say.

I’m guessing it was sarcasm, which is… ironic.

Definitely sarcasm.

But I suppose once we go down this rabbit hole, you can’t know if my certainty is sarcastic…

There were many better ways to have stated the offending post. It came across as being gleeful and dickish. The trouble with edgy humor is it can strike out pretty easily.

And it was really the wrong place for edgy humor, even if it hit the ball out of the park.

I don’t think the “don’t be a jerk” rule applies only to Dopers or those related to Dopers. Certainly if someone made a gleeful post about the Holocaust, or the death of gay people from HIV/AIDS, or victims of a school shooting, they’d get modded as well.

We don’t have to go as extreme as the holocaust. Just go read this thread about a poor kid that supposedly was decapitated on a theme park ride, plenty of posters making even more insensitive and provocative jokes that weren’t given warnings. Stuff like whether his head was found by the snowcone concession. Oh but nobody reported them, I call bullshit I regularly see posters make gallows humor jokes about deaths in various threads, this one was no different.

The problem with the OP’s post is he didn’t set the tone of the statement.

So it’s up to the reader to set the tone. I think it speaks to the cynicism of a lot people’s default position that he was being hateful. To me it clearly read as: “Geez, what a great morale booster”. Rather than: “Oh Joy! Dead people!”

But “Geez, what a great morale booster” is still very much out of place in that thread.

Yes basically this, I didn’t intend to come off with a ghoulish glee or something, I just expressed myself poorly as I often do.

Pool is the person that even managed to get a warning in the pit because of attacks on Margin who’s cat died. https://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=22141624&postcount=132

IMHO his comments on the Snowbird death are just a part of his pattern.
