Obligatory xkcd link.
Because it’s not a joke. I don’t understand why people think it is. The reason we started doing it was because people specifically requested we do so.
I can maybe understand people thinking that references to DisContinuity are jokes, as at least it started out that way, instead of what it is now–a short hand way of indicating how much you hate a specific work, and a silly little game amongst those who do not like it.
Do you also get mad when Sherlockians continue to pretend that the detective really existed? (Actually, considering the response to Cecil and Ed, I wouldn’t be surprised. You StopHavingFunGuys are really annoying.)
I was expecting this one.
Link. (Warning: Link)
I, for one, have never, not one time ever, found any use for the TV Tropes site. I can get sidetracked for ages by links to many sites - FARK, Cracked, Wikipedia, SDMB, just to name a few. But TV Tropes is BORING. So lots of TV shows were similar. Whoop de fricking doo.
Joe
That’s one reason why the “TVTropes: beware!” thing is a bit inaccurate. In my experience, the real addiction lies in coming in through a work you’re already interested in. THAT is where it starts: seeing what tropes are associated with your favorite TV show/book/manga/whatever, then following the trope links from there. It seems a lot less likely to get you going just starting on any old trope page.
You are traveling through another dimension. A journey not just of sight and sound, but of neckbeards and overused Simpsons quotes. A journey through a tiresome land whose boundaries are Monty Python references and /b/tard memes. Your next stop…
The Slack-Jawed Geek Zone.
I’m light-years away from a geek (in fact, I have never ever seen any of the Star Wars films) but I find TVT quite above the average. I’m rather digging the articles about the old video games.
Or, an identifiable thing happened in *one *show, so there is a page about it.
Or, “OMG, look at all these shows…People walked through the front door in ALL OF THEM! I must run to my computer and let the world know about this marvelous new trope! Then I will be the King of the Internet!”
I once clicked around on that website, and now only go if I don’t mouseover the link first. Blech.
But TVT is absolutely not only about TV (which I agree would be a bore).
What’s TV Tropes?
Something that’s been linked to a number of times in this thread. Click on them. Or do a little investigative work on your own and add “.com” to “tvtropes”.
Its kind of interesting. But I think the main problem with it is that too many of the examples given don’t really fit the trope. Its just fans of particular shows trying to shoehorn their favorite character into every page.
Google is your friend. (It’s the first hit there.)
TV Tropes is full of the most debauched creepy obese wapanese animu pedophile incestuous perverts I’ve ever encountered. Which is a shame since some of it is kinda funny.
You say that like it’s a bad thing.
Along with several warnings not to go there. Which is why I asked what it is so I could know without having to visit the site. Douche.
You are also a douche.
Same here. I’ve poked around there a little bit now and then, just to see what the fuss was about. It really didn’t interest me at all.
For fuck’s sake, it took you longer to type “What is TV Tropes?” than it would have to just plug “TV Tropes” into google.
Doesn’t every goddamn SDMBer (and you’re a 10-year Doper!) know to fucking Google something first?
Obviously not.
Joe
You’re welcome.
I don’t always use Google: I also use Wikipedia a lot.
