Hated it. How many lines did Gosling have in the movie? I think he said 50 words in total.
It has a pretty good soundtrack, anyway.
The wife and I loved Drive. I urge the OP to watch it.
I thought it was pretty good, but overhyped (by many critics) and I can see why it’s polarizing. I found the early-80’s-throwback stylization a bit too deliberate at times—the opening credits, for example.
Overall not a bad film, though, and the initial sequence of Gosling pulling a job was incredibly well done.
I split the difference. I’m keeping an eye out for a cheap copy of Drive. But while I’m waiting I ordered a copy of The Driver, the Walter Hill original from 1978.
What happened to Walter Hill anyway? There was like a five year period when he was great and then he dropped straight to nowhere.
That is indeed. But…
At first I figured he would actually walk into the pizzeria, hence the need for the mask. But all he does is sit outside the door, and peek in. No one seems to notice him, so wearing the mask was pointless. And then he goes and sits outside and waits for Nino - he had plenty of time to take the mask off.
Gosling himself said in an interview that the only reason it made sense to him was that his character “seen too many movies, and he’s started to confuse his life for a film. He’s lost in the mythology of Hollywood and he’s become an amalgamation of all the characters that he admires.” Obviously that’s just his own half-assed guess/method acting/whatever, but I tihnk its points in the direction of something more symbolic than actually making sense within the plot.
I mentioned my own WTF reaction to the mask in another thread about Drive. I agree with magnusblitz, it was weird.
