He was a very successful comic and his style influenced many comics and changed comedy for better and for worse. As mentioned, he was the ultimate observational comedian and was widely copied, but his material was always pretty light and inconsequential. He actually made fun of that on the show, the woman who he’s dating calls it “fluff.”

But his rise as a comic coincided with the rise of standup. In the 80s and 90s, standup was everywhere. There were all kinds of shows featuring standup and clubs popping up. Jerry’s success perfectly matched that boom.
