Paging Nava. Franco held a plebiscite in 1947 on the monarchy that restored it effective on his death and gave him the right to name his heir. So between 1947 and 1975 what was Spain, monarchy or republic? I know military dictatorship also applies. Did Spain have the trappings of a monarchy (like royal patronage, recognized nobility, etc) just not a King?
I can answer that – officially it was a monarchy, with Franco as Caudillo and effectively Regent. He stole a leaf from Admiral Horthy in Hungary, who between 1920 and 1944 ruled as (officially) Regent for the Hapsburg monarchy – but the Hapsburgs themselves were not permitted to enter the country.
