Exactly. The average person and the kind of people who vote Republican aren’t neoliberal policy wonks that love The West Wing, The Atlantic and Pod Save America. It’s amazing how time and time again people get surprised that not everyone has the same views, knowledge, experience etc. as them in a country of 330 million people spread across a continent. We don’t live in a perfectly fair and just world where everyone is perfectly moral, informed and good faith. Humans are closer to apes than angels. Not accepting this is just masochistic delusion.
A lot of it comes down to a thought of Doing things the “normal” way isn’t making my life better. Let’s do it Not Normal which is combined with a mistaken notion of “it can’t get much worse”.
Now, sure, part of the issue is that in 2020, faced with the Remove Trump Restore Normality imperative, the smart, safe choice was “let’s run the Ultimate Normal Establishment Nice Old White Guy.”
But that was supposed to be only for the purpose of that emergency. The mistaken idea was that once defeated Trump would do The Usual Thing and Go TF Away and the GOP would do their usual: say “Trump who?” and move on and so would we. Failure of imagination there. That then got you into the mode of “oh crap, it’s still him… so I guess we have to run Joe again? Only one who could beat him?” which then led to hanging on to that until it was too late.
Two major factors: 1 woman candidate 2 fear of foreigners. In fact 2 has been in effect long bfore Trump. He just made a strawman of it. Harris failed to indicate she would pass the Border Bill.
A few years back, maybe a year before 2016 election I caught some MAGA folk (pre MAGA then) talking about foreigners taking them cheap jobs. Roofers, ag work. I eavesdropped long enough to realize that neither one of the men understood that such a thing as a visa esxists. They just somehow assumed the “good immigrants” came here and became citizens and got jobs right away. That might be the basis for MAGA believing that illegals vote.
I’m not sure I buy the misogyny aspect. I can envision a scenario where the Repubs nominate a Nikki Haley type or a Condolezza Rice type and then get 60 million votes. In this scenario, it would be 60 million (give or take) Dems/Independents voting against a woman. Would that be due to misogyny?
It’s an academic exercise I guess b/c the Repubs have never nominated a woman to test the theory. And the last 12 years, with the Trump buzzsaw ripping through everyone (male/female; black/white/brown), there was never a chance.
But I can see a future where it’s the Dems voting against a Repub woman, and I wonder if we will be having this same conversation.
I wonder what his real-estate ‘associates’ that laughed behind his back in NY are thinking now. “Oh Shit” is probably close. But perhaps they will get a tax break.
If Trump tanks the economy as many of us fear, we are all in trouble though.
Donald Trump is a showman. He liked to be on stage, he likes audiences. He is at home at a Trump Rally. In fact he is still campaigning. He will do this for several months. And besides rallies, it was all social media.
His opponent was relatively unknown. As VP she could not claim that she personally did some presidential deed. Biden was in on it. The voters also look at a candidate and immediately form a gut feel.
Trump also took credit for several things Biden or Obama did.
Biden did none of that, a few speeches here and there. But he was so in the back ground, so presidential, that in this social media world it looks like he did nothing.
His 2016 “win” can be explained in large part that he said once, JUST ONCE, that he wanted abortion outlawed. Same thing this time around too, I guess. For many people, that’s all they’re looking for.
I considered spoilering this but decided not to. Anyway, I absolutely hate the phrase “abortion care” but I do understand that sometimes, it’s not a choice - it HAS to be done - and women are dying, or at least suffering unnecessarily, as a result. Fifty years ago, in many of these cases, the women would have died anyway, but we have better diagnostics now.
This time around, he regularly crowed about Roe v. Wade being overturned due to the Justices which he had appointed. So, he clearly used that as an intentional selling point to the Evangelicals.
