The original was cheesy, but revolutionary.
The new one is better made, but forgettable.
I prefer the original.

I watched the first today, RIGHT aft seeing the second one…people have fond memories of the first one…it’s baaaad. The second one isn’t much better, but it sure is pretty!
Yep, they did the type of thing that Wizard of Oz did with color. Up until the time Sam got sucked into the computer (house landed in Oz) the film was in 2-D (sepia).
Has there ever been a better original score that wasn’t nominated for the Oscar? What a travesty.
Covered in the thread when it came out, but it was awful in pretty much every way. Even the prettiness of it was boring.
My son, 8, enjoyed it. It was one of the more expensive naps I’ve ever taken.
It didn’t have the Bit so it sucked!
I watched it last night.
I thoroughly enjoyed the original when it came out, but recall this was in the very early 80’s, and the “gee whiz” effect was strong. I viewed it again a few more times over the decades, and realized that it was a pretty lame flick.
And the sequel certainly lived up to that tradition. I’m not even clear why they included the name Tron in the title (other than for marketing and continuity). What was done with the title character in the sequel was frankly pathetic.
However, the “gee whiz” factor was gone this time around.
There was a cameo appearance, as an ornament on Flynn’s mantel.
And you can never think about the movie for the rest of your life.
Except that blond chick. I “think” about her, often.
Which is funny, that’s a puzzle where both pieces interlock to form a cube…which is deep, n stuff, because Clue and Flynn interlock, n stuff.
Eh, whatshername the Iso was way cuter.
I think this is one of those movies that needs to be seen on a big screen – the bigger the better. All the chase scenes would have been much more attention-grabbing there than on our tv, which is where I watched it. My husband slept through it. I was mildly entertained. I do have a question, which may have been covered in other threads – was the young Flynn, Sr. and Clue a CGI construct as far as the face?
This. I moved up the armrest and cuddled up with my coat in the movie theater.
I watched it this weekend and was entertained by it. I thought they tried a little too hard to be “cool” with the costumes but otherwise it was ok for what it was.
I’m pretty sure they did that because Jeff Bridges is getting kinda old to play a younger version of himself.
Programs! It’s CLU, all caps, not Clue.
I liked it. I would’ve liked it better if they’d had the original theme in a spot or two as an homage, and if young Dillinger had a bigger role for continuity.
Interestingly, it was actually the other way around. The company that did the digital effects came up with the CGI generated young Jeff Bridges first and then said “Cool. We should show this to Disney and see if they want to make a movie out of it.”
Huh. Neat!
Did they really need to bother with the CGI’d Jeff Bridges?
As a fanboy, I was more than thrilled Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner were in it. But, I don’t need to see old guys digi-squeezed into 20-year-old buff bods.
Tron and CLU could easily have been played by younger actors and I don’t think the audience would scratch their heads and walk out.
I’d say that’s a safe bet.
