Was the new Tron good?

The new Tron Legacy movie is available on demand. I was thinking about watching ti, looking at the reviews from rotten tomatoes showed a mixed response. I was only just born when the original came out, but watching movie reruns as a kid was fun.

What do you guys think, is this new Tron worth the $5.99 for a home viewing?

It’s every bit as good as the original.

For what that’s worth.

Yes.
It has Daft Punk. And Jeff Bridges. And Olivia Wilde. And glorious special effects.

It wasn’t good but it was entertaining. $5.99 sounds a little steep to me, I’d hold out.

I remember seeing the first Tron, then sitting in front of a computer at school desperatly wishing I would get sucked in to it. I was so ready to rule that universe.

I liked the second one. Who knew Jeff Bridges had it in him? When he did that whole Obi Wan Ninja stuff… is it warm in here? I think its warm in here.

Good movie, enjoy!

It was OK. If a friend wanted to see it with me, I wouldn’t mind, but I wouldn’t pay six bucks just to see it myself. The effects were cool, of course, and the female lead was cute, but they seemed to miss the point of the original in several places, and there were a lot of things they should have explained but didn’t.

Addendum: On-Demand, you’re almost certainly going to get a 2-D version of it, which will make the effects less impressive. Plus, of course, probably a smaller screen than in the theaters.

I enjoyed it, but I think seeing it on a theater screen would make this better than seeing it on a TV screen. I saw it in the theater.

Is that true? I saw it in 3-D at the movies and I recall thinking (and then reading about it later) that the 3-D effects were kinda minimal. I remember even taking off my glasses later in the movie to see and the movie didn’t really look blurry like most 3-D movies do without the glasses to resolve the image.

Maybe I am thinking of something else.

Regardless, its a very well-done sci-fi movie. Go for it.

I have to agree with this. Don’t think too hard about the plot, enjoy the spectacle, Jeff Bridges, Daft Punk etc. It’s fun.

Thanks for the responses, guys. I ended up watching it with my parents and we enjoyed it. Surprisingly, my parents liked it more than I did! It was just as many have pointed out; not really deep, but a fun film nonetheless.

I found the new one rather boring to be honest. Saw it in the theater. Grossly inferior to the original.

Disk go in, brain go off.

It felt like a carbon copy of the original. All the same plot beats were in the same places, and the action sequences were just ramped up, better produced copies as well.

It looked pretty, though.

I didn’t see it 3-D <not a fan of the 3-D thing> but will emphatically cheer the soundtrack as being a HUGE part of the movie. This is one movie that really won’t be the same at home, as the effects and sound really gain a lot on the big screen, but if you do, just be sure you watch it at a time you can either turn up the volume or wear headphones or something. I think I play parts of the soundtrack just about every day at work and it still gets me going. :stuck_out_tongue:

Edit: I suggest not watching the original Tron before watching the second one, at least not AGAIN right before it. I hadn’t seen the original since it came out, barely remembered any of the plot or anything, but watched it the day AFTER watching the new one, and I personally enjoyed it a lot more than I might have just watching it on it’s own. There were just so many inside jokes in the second one that I got after really watching the first one.

Not to mention ‘Dude’; who’s channelling who, eh? I laughed my butt off watching the first one, wondering if the Dude was really just Flynn. :stuck_out_tongue:

I liked it.

Meh

I watched it last night. Good action, good sfx, but overall not very remarkable. I’m sure I would have enjoyed it more in all its 3D surround sound theater glory, but I didn’t. It’s still a fun movie worth seeing, but not something you have to rush out and see right now.

They left it open for another sequel, and the sequel could be good. Maybe.

Not the whole move was in 3D. I seem to remember some disclaimer about this at the beginning. I don’t really go to 3D movies much so I don’t really have much to compare it to, but it was certainly better than when I went to see Superman Returns in IMAX which had some scenes in 3D where the effect just didn’t work at all for me.

I second the vote for visually impressive but not because of 3-D. The only scenes that were helped by 3-d were

The light-cycle chase with the multiple levels, and the fugitive home (but even the second might not have been in 3-d).

I agree with Siam Sam, here. I loved the eye candy - but otherwise found it boring.

Definitely did not enjoy it as much as the original.
