Do you remember that test footage of TR2N that you could only see by watching a recording on YouTube that came from some guy in the audience with a camcorder? Well, now you can see that same footage officially in 1080p HD!
That clip is the viability test. Expect the movie to be quite different. They finished shooting a few weeks ago, and it will be released a year from now.
I think it looks dazzling, so I definitely am looking forward to it.
I can’t watch that at the moment, but I saw a video recently which is probably this.
I was of mixed opinion.
Jeff Bridges looked impressively intimidating, which was good. He’s matured significantly as an actor since Tron and can really lay down the awesome when he wants. If they give him any sort of story to work with, I’m sure I’ll be pleased.
But the rest of the video worried me. Firstly was that they seemed stuck on the line race. While certainly one of the coolest sequences in the old movie, it worries me that they feel they have to hang the new movie on one cool sequence from the old one. Secondly was that the creators of Tron took into account the limits of computer animation and special effects of their time and ended up making something which looked, essentially, photorealistic because anything that couldn’t be rendered perfectly, wasn’t. This seemed to have no issue whatsoever with trying to do fully rendered humans and animating them, but it still loses to uncanny valley. Thirdly, while the style is definitely based on the look of the original Tron, it doesn’t give the same artistic sense. The original had Moebius behind it to keep a consistent and very artsy look. I’m sure that all of the animators who worked on the film are perfectly capable artists in their own right, but none of them has risen to the level of personal fame for his artistic sense. You really need a master if you want something to look like a master’s work, regardless the polygon count you have to work with.
You have to remember that this is just a teaser. The lightcycles are easily the most recognizable part of Tron. I’ve never actually seen the original (but I will before this one comes out) but I knew about the game.
I don’t want to derail the thread but I just wanted to say that Jeff Bridges has always had awesome acting chops. Check out “Cutter’s Way” or “Thunderbolt and Lightfoot” for some excellent pre-Tron performances. Actually, “Thunderbolt and Lightfoot” would be a good candidate for the Non-cliche movie ending thread. That “passing of the cigar” scene still brings a tear to my eye when I think about it.
Anyway, I’m still hyped about this one. “Tron”, while fundamentally stoopid, still has a special place in my heart as I was a 13 yr old video game junkie when it first hit theatres.
