The scene in question is this (safe for work) one: No puedes comprar mi amor (Can't Buy Me Love, 1987) - YouTube (I could only find a Spanish dubbed version:() Former nerd Ronald has become popular through zany antics is on a date with the school vixen Patty. She’s trying to seduce a shy Ronald who’s new to this and says “I happen to know that in the whole town, there’s only one other titty quite this pretty. And here it is!” The debate starts at this point.
I and many others say that the scene never included Patty actually showing her tits after her famous line (for teenage boys) and only showed her from the cleavage up. However, there is an equal number of posters who say no, the original scene did show her breasts and the one we’re referring to is an edited version that was cleaned up for cable.
The post was started in 2005 and is still alive today with posters coming and going and chiming in with their 2-cents. The laughable part of it is there have been many posters who say they possess the original VHS copy with the breast-revealing scene and will upload it somewhere as proof of its existence but can’t do so right now because it’s stored away in their attic, their friend who lives far away has it, the video store that had it burned down, etc… Needless to say, these posters never come back and there still has been no proof that Patty ever showed her tits. On the other hand, there’s no definitive proof that she never showed them. Just our memories from an almost 30-year-old movie.
If it were just a few posters who claimed that breasts were shown in the original theatrical release, I could just think they were mistaken, but there have been numerous posters who say otherwise, (with many of them signing up just to say so), and that they clearly remember seeing them.
Does anyone have the straight dope on this scene in question?
I think this is one of those situations that can easily be answered by Googling the actress’ name with “topless.” The Internet being what it is, if there’s a screen cap of attractive boobies anywhere, someone has uploaded it.
To save you time, I did just that. While there are topless scenes of the actress in question, they’re all from another movie.
Also, I notice the movie was rated PG-13. I’m pretty sure boobies would have gotten an automatic R.
Google images is hardly evidence that a scene existed or not. As for PG-13 rated films showing boobs getting an automatic R, does James Cameron know that?
I grew up in New Zealand and saw that movie a dozen times. Right before she puts money into the Zoltar machine, a man walks up and says “what does that thing do?” and she replies “that’s the beauty of it. It doesn’t do anything.”
Exactly. Mr. Skin is a great cite (and site) for this question. I thought that scene did feature topless, but I guess not. However, as a 10th grader during that time, I would’ve preferred to see Amanda Peterson topless. (Bikini pic: http: // www. listal. com/ viewimage/ 6803863)
Well, I’ve always been firm believer that there was never a topless scene. Which leads to my ancillary question: How could so many disparate individuals mis-remember the same exact scene?
Well duh, I understand they imagined seeing boobs. The question is why so many? There were many adamant posters who swore on their mothers’ graves that they saw them, or remember a specific event (like covering someone’s eyes) because of that scene.
I actually went to that movie in the theater with my parents (I was either 12 or 13), why we picked that movie for a family outing I have no idea. The entire experience was rather uncomfortable given some of the themes in the movie… (I was a nerdy kid, who liked space, very awkward around girls, just like the Dempsey character but younger) … thank God there wasn’t “surprise” PG-13 nudity on top of those.
They’re probably confusing Can’t Buy Me Love with some other teen comedy they saw around the same time. Mischief, perhaps. It came out two years earlier, Amanda Peterson and Kelly Preston look somewhat alike, and there was a nude scene in Mischief. Add thirty years and people “remember” a nude scene in Can’t Buy Me Love.
People misremember things all the time, and will often swear up and down that they’re certain they remember something that didn’t really happen. In this specific case, I don’t think there’s anything mysterious about a teen movie featuring a scene with racy dialogue and a girl with her top off (but bra on) causing some teen viewers to vividly imagine naked boobies.
