Side note, but I love reading SD columns from the '70s, precisely because it mixed in information that is now so easily available on IMDB, on Allmusic, and via Google. It reminds me of a younger time where questions would (gently) gnaw at you, and it wasn’t a matter of a few keystrokes to find the answer. Not a better time, or a gentler time, or any kind of moral judgment, just a different time, one in which the Straight Dope played a different role.

I know what you mean. It was an era when more information was in the realm of lore, and gathering it was slow, so much so that certain people had no time to do anything else. You could tell them by their indoor pallor, sloppy dress, and scraps of paper covered in tiny writing.
