Washer/Dryer in kitchen? Suggestions?

I just moved into a great apartment. It has everything I wanted except…no washer/dryer in the unit or in the basement. There is a laundromat down the street, but I’d rather have something in my apartment.

I’m going to talk to my landlord about installing one in the basement, but I have heard there are units that you can hook up in your kitchen through the faucet. Anyone have any experience with these? Are they worth the trouble? Thanks!

The kinds of washers you can hook up to a faucet are cumbersome to set up and wash very few clothes. (Sears used to sell portable washers, but I can’t find any on their website anymore.) Do you have the pipes and drain for a washer in your basement? Even if you don’t, I would talk to your landlord about getting them installed. You could have a full-size washer and dryer and you wouldn’t have to decide whether to cook dinner or have clean clothes for the next day.

You could try one of these:washer

what? it’d work!

I have not had experience with the smaller apartment-sized washer/dryer combinations, but I have had experience with (temporarily) draining a full-size washer into the kitchen sink. Depending on how fast the cycle drains the washer’s tub, you probably will need to stand RIGHT THERE during the “drain” cycle and figure on switching the hose to the other sink halfway through the cycle, as the water probably won’t drain out one side of the kitchen sink fast enough. And if you only have one drain in the kitchen sink to drain with, I personally wouldn’t try it.

Not without several mops handy.

I have a full-sized washing machine in my kitchen, with permanent fittings for source and drain. It was worth sacrificing 30 inches of countertop.

Hmm…Thanks for the excellent suggestions (and the handy tip, DDG – I only have one sink). I’ll talk to the landlord and see what we can arrange…
