Washing machine overflow (no) repair

My washing machine recently leaked, or so I thought. Not a small amount, gallons. Rushed out onto the floor, through the floor/wall and out the downstairs neighbor’s window in biblical proportions.
The repair man found no problems with the machine. It’s a stacked frigidaire about 15 years old. Top load washer. So, user error, right?
The best advice the expert had for me was don’t ever use the large setting. He said he’d seen this once before on the same machine but it was caused by filling before adding clothes.
So this is what I did that he thinks caused the problem. I was pre soaking some sheets and pillow cases. After that I set the machine to drain. After that, I added some socks and t-shirts, and even tho it wasn’t a large load, I switched from medium to large while it was filling. Expert opinion is that I made a fatal error somewhere. Any guesses where?
Also, any amusing washing machine stories that felt tragic at the time but worked out in the end are appreciated.

Fill before you put the load in is always a recipe for disaster, or at least unnecessary water waste.

Makes sense. I didn’t do that.

Okay, I slightly misread your post. (And it’s something I argued with Mrs. B. about for the entire 6-8 years we had a top-loader. Start fill, go wandering around looking for a load, stuff it into the water. Sigh. Front-loader now for ten years, no basis for argument.)

But yeah, switching load size in the middle might have confused the poor thing. After doing a major top-to-bottom rebuild of a front-loader recently, I discovered that almost nothing on newer washers works quite the way you think it should. So confusing the control unit is definitely possible. Sounds like a mess.

It was a huge mess. But it was absurd so it’s not so tough to find humor in it now. Glad you both figured out a solution to that domestic dispute. I’ve definitely been guilty of starting to fill before getting a load ready. This was the opposite of that in a way. I think I did confuse her tho. I hope this can serve as a warning to someone, somewhere
