Washing Machine repair/issue

I have stacked washing machine/dryer from Sears that’s about 2 years old. I noticed recently that with nothing in the washer the tub and agitator sit off center. It wasn’t like this when I first bought it so I suspect something broke or wore out. It still works fine, and when full of water and clothes seems to be on center, at least when spinning. This is a top loader. So, my questions:

  • Are there a set of springs or something similar that keeps the tub centered? And did one or more of them break/detach causing my problem?
  • Am I ruining my washer by running it like this?
  • Is the fix something I can do myself, or should I call in for a repair?

Yes, there are springs.
Yes, they can break.
Ruining? I ran mine for 2 years with the replacement springs sitting in a box on top of the dryer.
If it’s under warranty, call in the repair.
If not, pop it open and look inside. If it’s just the springs, they are far easier to fix than my procrastination would indicate. I did finally swap the new ones in.
