At least that’s the impression they’re giving. While USA Today and the Washington Times have Hope above the fold, the Post has quarterback Patrick Ramsey! They put Hope below the fold! What the fuck were they thinking?
In DC the Skins are more important than just about anything.
Maybe it’s because I’m relatively young (24), but I don’t get what the big screaming deal is about Bob Hope.
Then again, I couldn’t give two shits about most people dying. Unless of course, they were important in my life (friends, family, ect).
Bob Hope was not important in my life. Therefore, I hear he’s dead and I don’t really care.
Yeah, Jeff.
This is Washington.
Those are The Redskins. They’re arguably more important to the city than any member of Congress. And far more worthy of front-page, over-the-flap than an obit.
Folks, if you’re not from Washington you just can understand the grip that team has on this city. They generate more interest in Washington than all other forms of entertainment combined.
This city bleeds burgundy and gold.
Bob Hope was a nice guy, and he was genuinely funny. Those two facts alone would be enough reasons to pause for his passing.
I would guess perhaps because it’s not exactly unexpected-the man was 100 years old, and has been in very poor health for quite some time now.
That being said, I agree Bob Hope is more important than football.
Who the fuck is Bob Hope?
And what’s a redskin?
No one is more important than football. Patrick Ramsey, however, is not interesting news to anyone.
I would disagree that Bob Hope is more important that football. Bob Hope was a wonderful person, certainly. But football employs tens of thousands of individuals and provides secondary economic aid to millions. A world without Bob Hope will move on in a few days. A world without football would leave tens of thousands unemployed.
Bob Hope is dead… football is still going… He DID make the front page for fucks sake what more do you want???
I’m trying to come up with some sort of analogy and failing. Because it’s true. The Redskins are The Focal Point of a lot of people year-round, and that only gets bigger as we approach football season (and it’s almost August. Minicamps have started for some teams).
You know, I honestly can’t come up with anything. Football is just … if the Redskins are even close to winning, everything else is “yeah, but the Redskin won/almost won/got cheated/got smashed”. And if it’s a season like their last super bowl … you could walk into a bar with your hair on fire and you’d only get noticed if you A) walked in front of the TV or B) upset the reception.
The Washington Post … they know their audience, they do.
Bob Hope’s death was on the sports page?
A few days ago my local paper had a story about a toll road on the front page. On page five, there was a story about AIDS and Africa.
Clearly they are saying that a 35 cent toll is more important than millions of people dying of AIDS! How dare they bump international stories that we are already familiar with to the back pages, while posting local news on the front! How dare they make editorial decisions based on the local market!
In other words, get over it.
Somehow, I don’t think Bob minds his story was below the fold.
Well said.
The other thing to remember is that Bob Hope died Sunday night, and everyone knew about his death Monday, although it occurred too late to make the Monday papers. So it’s not exactly breaking news. And it’s not like they didn’t cover it at all.
I’d buy that if the Times had done the same.
Munch: no argument there. All I’m saying is the Post should have given him one more day in the spotlight but they gave us Ramsey instead.
There’s a reason the Times doesn’t have the circulation of the Post. For one thing, it doesn’t have nearly the Sports coverage on any given day.
And here I thought the problem was Rev. Moon!
Oh, how little you guys know.
I interviewed over there to run some of their marketing.
I was told, in effect, that the circulation and profitability (they lose money every year) aren’t important to the owners of the Washington Times. Rather, it was important politically for the Reverend Moon to own a newspaper in Washington, DC. Nothing else mattered. Not at all.
It was a weird interview down there on New York Ave. One of the weirdest.
