Washington's "Founding Fathers"

C’mon. The fat kid in Stand By Me grew up to marry Rebecca Romijn. Admit it, that’s pretty weird.

If the number of fat kids who got skinnier as they aged is even 1% of the number of skinny actresses who claim to have been fat or homely or loners as kids then it’s less weird than deep-fried butter.

Or claiming that Ed isn’t Cecil. Now, that’s weird.

This happens with British ministers too.

After the most recent general election a minor political hoo-haa was caused by the former chief secretary to the treasury, Liam Byrne, left a letter that basically sums up Labour economic management for you. This is compeltely true by the way.

The letter said

To be fair, while I utterly detest the evils of the Labour party, especially the Labour party back then (it’s getting marginally less evil now and could even be decent again given time, although it will probably always be economically inept) they were not the first to do it. There was a note left in the 1960s to James Callaghan (who would eventually become PM but was then going to be chancellor) by the outgoing Tory, whose name I forget, which said

Here endeth the lesson.

No, it’s private, tradition is it’s kept that way, and if it wasn’t and ex presidents knew I wouldn’t care what was written on them. There’s no vault with those notes.

It would have been Reginald Maudling. He was the Conservative Chancellor Callaghan succeeded in 1964.
