Wasp/hornet nest INSIDE the window-what to do?

Wanted to update you on the Great Interior Wasp Battle.

I went to Home Depot last night and got a can of wasp/hornet spray. *(Which can to pick, which can to pick, can’t screw this up.) * This one is a more recognizable brand, but it’s more expensive. This one is cheaper but the stream only goes 20 feet and I’m not sure if that will be far enough. In the end I got the can that sprayed the farthest: 27 feet.

Well, they lie. It did not spray 27 feet. But anyway. Before going out back, I made sure the front door was unlocked. (No way was I going to try going in the back door just in case they were following me; they wouldn’t have had long to go.) I went outside at dusk, stood well within “27 feet” of the 2nd story window, and aimed at the outside of the screen. Disaster. For one, that thing did not spray 27 feet. For two, the wind blew it back in my direction. I don’t think any actually hit the screen. So I went up on the deck and aimed again. This time I could see the screen getting wet so I knew at least something was getting inside, but the position of the nest was awkwardly inaccessible. It’s not like I was spraying directly on it. So I just stood there for a few seconds thinking, hmmm, I wonder if they fly out or if I hit them … and then I thought, what in god’s name am I doing out here when a swarm of angry wasps is probably waiting to fly out that hole in the screen and find out who is trying to murder them??? So I ran like hell to the front door. I think if I had been timed, I surely would have qualified for the Olympic trials.

I went back upstairs and shined a flashlight on the nest, through the still-closed window. I didn’t see any wasps on it, but didn’t see any dead inside on the sill either. The nest looked slightly wet but not really “much” of anything. So I sprayed some more spray through the crack between the top and bottom parts of the window. I could definitely see spray going down in there but still couldn’t really get it on the nest itself. The can had said to wait 24 hours (even though it also said “kills on contact”) so I just went to bed after that. Left the window shut, of course.

This morning I looked again at the next. Still seemed lifeless: no wasps. I opened the window slowly and down below it was some large (1/2") larva-looking thing, and about six or eight dead wasps on the interior sill. I taped up the hole in the screen with metal tape and shut the window again, leaving the dead wasps there for now. I have to find something to scoop them up with, and then figure out how to clean the sill of the dripped spray, because I’m worried my cats will ingest it.

I hope to god that larva thing doesn’t hatch into something horrible and consumed with a thirst for vengeance.

Thanks to everyone for all the advice! Never thought I’d have to worry about a wasps nest in my bedroom. I’m surprised they hadn’t come out and gotten me already.

P.S. Love the song. You two should get together and write a musical.
